Woman, 25, Shot At In Gurugram Club For Refusing Marriage Proposal

A 25-year-old woman was shot at inside a club in Gurugram after she allegedly refused a marriage proposal from a man, police said on Thursday.

The incident took place in the early hours of December 20 on MG Road.

Police said they received information about a woman injured in a firing incident and found her admitted to a private hospital, where she was initially unfit to give a statement.

The woman's husband, from Najafgarh in Delhi, lodged a complaint stating that his wife, Kalpana (25), worked at a club in Gurugram and was shot by Tushar, a resident of Sangam Vihar in Delhi.

In his complaint, the husband said his wife had gone to work on December 19 and around 1 am called him to say she had been shot.

“Around a month ago Tushar came to our house, had a fight with us and left,” the complainant added.

Based on the complaint, an FIR was registered at Sector 29 police station.

During the investigation, a crime unit team arrested two accused, Tushar alias Jonty (25) and his friend Shubham alias Jony (24), both residents of Sangam Vihar, from Baraut in Uttar Pradesh, police said.

During interrogation, police said Tushar revealed that he befriended the victim around six months ago and wanted to marry her, but she repeatedly refused.

Police alleged that on the night of December 19, Tushar, along with Shubham, went to the club, proposed to her again and upon refusal shot the woman.

The accused have been arrested and are being questioned, police said, adding that further investigation is underway.

Navi Mumbai Airport To Begin Commercial Flight Ops From Tomorrow

The Adani Group-promoted Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) will commence commercial flight operations on Thursday, according to a statement.

First conceived in 1997 by Maharashtra's city planning agency, City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the airport in 2018.

The airport was inaugurated by the Prime Minister on October 8 this year.

At the foundation-laying ceremony, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had announced that the "first flight from Navi Mumbai International Airport will take off in December 2019".

Since 2021, Adani Airports Holdings Limited (AAHL), a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL), has led the development, construction, and operational readiness of the greenfield airport, progressing it from accelerated construction to phased commercial operations within a compressed time frame.

Now, finally, the airport, inspired by India's national flower, the lotus, the terminal architecture integrated cultural identity, contemporary design and sustainability features, is set for operations after nearly eight years, which also includes two years of the pandemic.

The development is expected to reduce congestion at the existing Mumbai International Airport, besides significantly boosting capacity in the MMR.

On the first day, IndiGo, Air India Express, Akasa Air and Star Air will operate domestic services, connecting the new facility to nine destinations across India, the private airport operator said on Wednesday.

The airport will handle 15 scheduled departures on the first day, it said, adding that during the initial phase, the facility will operate for 12 hours -- between 8 am and 8 pm, with up to 24 scheduled daily departures to 13 destinations and the capability to manage up to 10 aircraft movements (arrivals and departures) per hour, it added.

The first phase of the five-phased airport has been built at a cost of Rs 19,650 crore.

Spread across 1,160 hectares, the airport will have one terminal and one runway in the first phase, with an annual passenger handling capacity of 20 million.

By the time all five phases of the airport are completed, it will be catering to 90 million passengers annually, along with dedicated cargo terminals and multimodal connectivity.

The entire project is being developed in multiple phases under a special purpose vehicle, Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd (NMIAL), in which the Adani Group has a 74 per cent stake, and the remaining 26 per cent is owned by CIDCO.

From February next year, operations are planned to progressively scale up to round-the-clock services, the airport operator said.

The opening adds a critical new gateway for a region that has faced sustained congestion for over a decade, it said, adding that planned as part of a distributed aviation framework, NMIA supports Mumbai's transition to a multi-airport system aimed at improving capacity, operational resilience and long-term scalability.

Passenger services from day one will be supported by Digi Yatra-enabled contactless processing at designated touchpoints, along with trained terminal staff across kerbside, check-in, security and boarding areas, the private airport operator said.

Retail and food and beverage offerings have been curated with a focus on affordability and local relevance.

With operations set to begin tomorrow, NMIA is expected to strengthen Mumbai's role as a global gateway and support long-term economic growth through expanded aviation capacity, the airport operator stated.

"Pathetic Trainwreck": Trump Says Stephen Colbert Should Be "Put To Sleep"

On the eve of Christmas, President Donald Trump has unleashed a fresh blast of vitriol at late-night comedy talk shows, saying comedian Stephen Colbert is a "pathetic trainwreck" who should be "put to sleep."

Colbert's "The Late Show" is scheduled to end in May 2026, a decision his fans say smacks of censorship.

In a late-night Truth Social post, Trump wrote that Colbert "has actually gotten worse" since being "terminated by CBS, but left out to dry."

"Stephen is running on hatred and fumes. A dead man walking! CBS should, 'put him to sleep,' NOW," Trump wrote.

Colbert has hosted "The Late Show" since 2015, and it has been the highest-rated late-night talk show on US television. His opening monologues often take aim at the Republican president.

There was no immediate public response from Colbert or CBS to Trump's post.

CBS announced the sunsetting of Colbert's show after one more season in July, the same month its parent company reached a $16 million settlement with Trump. CBS called the cancellation "a purely financial decision."

Trump had sued Paramount, alleging that CBS News' "60 Minutes" program deceptively edited an interview with his 2024 election rival, Kamala Harris, in her favour.

In another overnight post, Trump repeated threats to yank the broadcast licenses of networks whose content he deemed overly critical.

"If Network NEWSCASTS, and their Late Night Shows, are almost 100% Negative to President Donald J. Trump, MAGA, and the Republican Party, shouldn't their very valuable Broadcast Licenses be terminated? I say, YES!"

On Sunday, CBS's new editor-in-chief, Bari Weiss, pulled a "60 Minutes" segment on alleged torture at El Salvador's CECOT prison -- where Trump sent hundreds of deported Venezuelans -- saying it needed more reporting.

In August, Disney-owned ABC briefly suspended its late-night star, Jimmy Kimmel, before bringing him back on a one-year contract.

Kimmel had annoyed conservatives with comments in the wake of the murder of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk.

Trump appears to be aiming to reshape the US media landscape, which he says is biased against conservatives.

His appointee to head the Federal Communications Commission, Brendan Carr, turned heads when he told a Congressional hearing that "the FCC is not formally an independent agency," implying that his actions could justifiably be aligned with the political priorities of the White House.

Dhurandhar Actor Naveen Kaushik Reveals Why Pakistanis Are Loving The Film

Aditya Dhar's Dhurandhar has been unstoppable at the box office. Led by Ranveer Singh, the film's plot revolves around gangs of Karachi's Lyari Town. The film has been watched in Pakistan, and social media has been abuzz with reactions. Now, Naveen Kaushik, who played the character of Donga in the film, has opened up about why it seems to have had an impact on the audience in Pakistan.

What's Happening

  • In conversation with Live Hindustan, Naveen Kaushik spoke about how he has noticed that the reactions coming in from Pakistan deeply reflect how people of that country realise that the film does not disrespect them.
  • He said, "Maine ek cheez notice kari hai ki wahan se jo comments aa rahe hain... unhone ye notice kiya hai ki film mein humne wahan ki logon ko gaali nahi di hai, humne unko criticise nahi kiya hai. Humne Muslim community ko koi gaali nahi di hai. Koshish yahi rahi hai ki uss system mein jo corrupt log hain, ya jo agents hain jo poore mahaul ka misuse kiya aur aisi situations create kari jahan India pe attack ho rahe hain... humne unko highlight karne ki koshish kari hai. (I have noticed in the comments that the Pakistani audience has realised that the film has never talked ill about them, never criticised them. We have not abused the Muslim community. We have tried to highlight those corrupt people who have taken advantage of the situation and manufactured such attacks on India.)"
  • He added, "Toh woh cheez wahan ke log bhi yahi recognise kar rahe hain ki, 'Haan, ye log humare desh ka bhi bhatta bitha rahe hain.' (This is what the Pakistani audience has recognised: yes, these are the people who have caused the trouble.)"
  • "Toh log usse relate kar paa rahe hain ki hum bhi kehna chahte the, hum bhi chahte the ki aise logon ke upar sawal uthe. Unko koi target karein na ki woh ki ek insaan ke liye poora desh kharab hai, woh kehna galat hoga. Isliye film ko dekh kar pyaar bhej rahe hain, which is nice," concluded the actor. (They have related to the fact that these people must be questioned. They must be targeted... not the entire country, which would not serve the purpose. That is why the film has received so much love.)"

No Study Says Only 9% Aravalli Above 100 Meters: Forest Survey Of India

The Forest Survey of India (FSI) has issued a rebuttal to recent media reports and interpretations suggesting that its studies or data indicate only 9% (approximately 8.7-9%) of the Aravalli hills rise above 100 meters in height, implying that 90% of the range would lose protection following the Supreme Court's judgment dated November 20.

In a post on X, the FSI, responsible for assessment and monitoring of the forest resources of the country, clarified that it has not conducted or endorsed any specific study claiming that merely 9% of the Aravalli range qualifies as hills above 100 meters, nor has it concluded that 90% of the hills would be left unprotected as a result of the top court's recent order.

The backstory

The controversy stems from the Supreme Court's landmark judgment on November 20 in long-pending matters related to mining and environmental protection in the Aravalli Hills and Ranges.

The court accepted a uniform definition recommended by a high-level committee under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC). This definition classifies landforms as "Aravalli Hills" if they rise 100 meters or more above the local surrounding terrain (relief), with adjacent areas and slopes included, and "Aravalli Ranges" as clusters of such hills within 500 meters of each other.

The ruling aimed to resolve longstanding inconsistencies in how different states defined the Aravallis, which span across Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat, and Delhi. The court also imposed a freeze on new mining leases until a comprehensive Management Plan for Sustainable Mining is prepared, emphasising the range's critical role in preventing desertification, recharging groundwater, and acting as a natural barrier against dust storms from the Thar Desert.

Media reports and environmental groups have cited internal assessments - reportedly from the FSI - showing that, in Rajasthan alone, only about 1,048 out of 12,081 mapped hill formations (rising at least 20 meters) meet the 100m threshold. This equates to roughly 8.7%, leading to claims that over 90% of the Aravalli system could lose legal safeguards against mining, construction, and other activities.

These interpretations have sparked widespread protests in Rajasthan and Haryana, with environmentalists warning of accelerated ecological degradation, increased desertification risks, and threats to the Delhi-NCR region's air quality.

FSI's Clarification
The FSI emphasised that the figures being circulated do not represent an official FSI study concluding widespread loss of protection. It stated:

> "FSI categorically refutes claims in certain sections of the media that it has carried out any study saying that only 9% Aravalli is above 100 meters."

The organization further clarified:

> "FSI categorically refutes claims in certain sections of the media that it has carried out any study showing that 90% of the hills in Aravalli would be left unprotected following the recent judgement of Supreme Court"

The FSI's position aligns with government clarifications, including statements from Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, asserting that the new definition - when applied to entire hill systems, contours, and surrounding areas - will actually bring over 90% of the Aravalli region under protected status. Officials have described the 100-meter criterion as a globally accepted geological standard (drawing from classifications like Richard Murphy's), aimed at preventing misuse and ensuring objective, map-verifiable boundaries.

Broader Implications
The Aravalli range, often called India's oldest mountain system (dating back over 2 billion years), has been a focal point of environmental litigation since the 1990s. Previous Supreme Court interventions, including bans on mining in certain areas, were driven by concerns over irreversible damage from quarrying.

While environmental activists and opposition leaders have labelled the new definition a potential "death warrant" for much of the range, the government and the court maintain that it strengthens uniform protection and sustainable regulation.

The FSI's rebuttal comes amid ongoing debates and protests, with calls for more inclusive criteria (such as slope-based definitions previously used by the FSI) to better capture the ecological continuity of the low-relief hills and ridges.

Professor Suspended Over "Atrocities Against Muslims" Question In Exam Paper

A professor at Delhi's Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) was suspended after a question he set in a semester examination triggered widespread controversy and outrage on social media.

The university has also constituted an inquiry committee to probe the matter, officials said.

The controversy centres on a 15-mark question in the BA (Hons) Social Work first-semester examination, held earlier this week, in a paper titled 'Social Problems in India'.

The question asked students to "discuss the atrocities against Muslim minorities in India, giving suitable examples".

Prof Virendra Balaji Shahare created the test.

Following complaints, the university said it took a "serious view" of what it described as negligence and carelessness on the part of faculty member.

"An inquiry committee has been formed to examine the issue. Until the committee submits its report, the concerned professor has been placed under suspension," a university official told NDTV.

The official added that the move was taken to uphold academic responsibility and institutional discipline.

An order signed by officiating registrar CA Sheikh Safiullah, and circulated widely on social media, confirmed the suspension "till further orders".

The order also stated that "Prof Shahare's headquarters during the suspension period would be New Delhi and he shall not leave the headquarters without prior permission of the Competent Authority".

The same order mentioned that a police FIR would be filed "as per rules". However, university officials later clarified that there was no intention, at present, to register an FIR against the professor.

"There is no proposal to file any police case against the faculty member. The matter is being examined internally through a committee," an official said, seeking to clear confusion arising from the wording of the order.

Images of the question paper began circulating online on Monday, prompting sharp reactions from several users, who questioned the appropriateness of the wording and alleged political or communal bias.

The issue gained further traction after Kanchan Gupta, senior adviser to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, shared the suspension notice on X.

"Jamia Millia Islamia is a central university with a mixed student community. The question shows malicious intent," Gupta wrote, criticising the paper setter.

While Jamia Millia Islamia has not issued a detailed public statement beyond the suspension order, sources said the inquiry committee will examine how the question was framed and approved, and whether it violated university norms or examination guidelines.

The findings of the committee are expected to determine the next course of action in the case.

Singer Harassed While Performing 'Jago Maa'. What Is The Song All About?

Bengali singer Lagnajita Chakraborty was allegedly harassed for performing the song "Jago Maa" during a concert on Saturday, sparking widespread criticism.

A man has been arrested for allegedly targeting the popular singer for not singing a "secular" song and instead performing what he perceived as a "religious" number at a private school in East Midnapore's Bhagwanpur.

So what is the song all about?

According to the singer, she performed the track from the upcoming Bengali movie Devi Chowdhurani. The song's lyricist, Ritam Sen, clarified to NDTV that the song is based on "motherhood and not a Goddess."

"What happened to Lagnajita during her show was completely unacceptable," Sen told NDTV. "One needs to understand that the lyrics of 'Jago Maa' are not about any deity. The song is themed around a mother and the concept of motherhood, representing feminine energy."

He added that the song was created as a promotional video for the film and is based on the iconic character of Devi Chowdhurani, not the Goddess Durga.

Directed by Subhrajit Mitra and starring Prosenjit Chatterjee and Srabanti Chatterjee, Devi Chowdhurani is a historical drama adapted from Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay's classic novel.

Recalling the incident, Lagnajita said, "I had finished my seventh song and was communicating with the audience before starting the eighth. I had just finished 'Jago Maa' and was explaining the details of the song to the crowd when I saw a man come running onto the stage. He looked like he wanted to hit me."

"When he realised that, well, he really could not manage to beat me up, even after all this. While he was being pulled away from me, he shouted and said, 'Enough of your Jaago Ma, now sing something secular," Langajita added further.

Opinion: Opinion | Telangana A Lab For Congress's Minority Policy

One of the that catapulted Revanth Reddy to the Chief Minister's chair in Telangana is his aggression. He does not believe in keeping it subtle when he wants to drive a point home. When he spoke about "sacrifices" by Sonia Gandhi that have enabled Christians to celebrate Christmas in Telangana, it was not so much about sycophancy as a well-thought-out political strategy.

As expected, it caught everyone's attention and sent the political mercury soaring. The BJP has called it "Olympic-level sycophancy and boot-licking" and said this was an insult to Jesus Christ and the Christian community, and mockingly suggested that the Congress may next claim the Sun rises because of the Gandhi family.

The BRS called it political theatrics and recirculated videos from when Revanth Reddy was in the Telugu Desam Party and had reportedly referred to Sonia Gandhi as "Bali Devatha" (Deity of Sacrifice), blaming her for the death of young people during the movement for a separate state.

Examine the statement: "If people are celebrating Christmas in Telangana today, it is because of Sonia Gandhi's sacrifice."

This was a sequel to Reddy's explosive comment just a month ago, in the run-up to a high-decibel by-poll in Jubilee Hills, when he told the Muslim electorate: "Hum hain tho aap hain" (You exist because we exist and you are nothing without the Congress). He even suggested that they were able to celebrate Islamic festivals because of the Congress government.

Revanth Reddy did not make a random statement to appease the minority community or flatter his political boss. It is a calculated piece of a much larger, sharper game plan to break the hold of the BRS, or even the AIMIM, over the minority vote.

By linking religious festivities and even minority "existence" with the Congress party, Reddy is moving away from the BRS model of secularism, focusing on welfare schemes like Shaadi Mubarak, and instead moving the narrative to protectionism. Under KCR, the BRS treated minorities as "beneficiaries" of welfare. It was a top-down model of financial doles. It was a patronage model.

Revanth Reddy is framing the Congress not just as a choice among `secular' parties, but as a survival shield against a rising BJP, raising the bogey that under the BJP, even the right to exist and celebrate their festivals is under threat.

Revanth Reddy is pivoting the Congress as an "aggressive protector".
By invoking Sonia Gandhi's "sacrifice" for statehood, he is trying to communicate to the minority community that they owe some kind of a gratitude that goes beyond a payout from the treasury, positioning the Congress as the party that will ensure protection of their rights and that it is an architect of their freedom.

For years, the AIMIM has been seen as the voice of the Muslims, and undeniably held the monopoly on Muslim representation, in what can be seen as a ghetto model. With not enough strength of numbers to lead the state on its own, it often acted as a tactical ally to the BRS. Revanth Reddy is directly challenging this "outsourcing" of minority leadership.

By bringing the Telangana model of caste census into the mix, the Congress is telling the so-called Pasmanda or backward Muslims and Christians, that they can be mainstreamed to get a share of power the "Mandal" way rather than through religious representation, which is the "Majlis" way. That was a move by then Congress Chief Minister YS Rajasekhar Reddy that was struck down by the Supreme Court.

Revanth Reddy is also moving beyond mere rhetoric. He is promising a law that will act as an anti-hate shield.

Reddy has said this is modelled after a similar move in Karnataka, suggesting that it is the Congress that is building a legal fortress to ensure that when there are rogue comments, the state would become your bouncer, your protector.

While the BRS often avoided direct confrontation on communal issues to maintain a "neutral" image, Reddy is taking a side. He is legislating against "insults to faith", effectively making the BRS and AIMIM's rhetoric look passive in comparison.

Revanth Reddy's reference to a "Miracle Month", linking the birthday of Jesus, the birthdate of Sonia Gandhi and Telangana's birth is meant to strike an emotional chord about the political stakes the Congress had been willing to risk because it took a "principled" stance on statehood. The message is that the Congress knew it would lose out in Andhra Pradesh because of "giving" Telangana and yet it kept its promise. Similarly, it would act on behalf of minorities, without looking at political expediency.

What Revanth Reddy is betting on is that, in the coming years, to counter an aggressive Hindutva political force like the BJP, minority voters won't be satisfied merely with the "secular" credentials of any party. They would want a "warrior" party that can mainstream them. Telangana is a lab for the Congress to amplify in the rest of the country.

Why Ishan Kishan Has Been Selected For T20 World Cup 2026 - Explained

Almost two years after slipping out of the national picture, Ishan Kishan has forced his way back into India's T20 squad the only way that matters - runs. The Jharkhand left-hander lit up the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, finished as the tournament's highest scorer and sealed his return with a breathtaking hundred in the final. In a season where consistency trumped reputation, Kishan's bat did the talking. The left-handed wicketkeeper-batter topped the run charts in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with 571 runs and capped the campaign with a match-winning century in the final, leading Jharkhand to their maiden title.

Kishan's return comes after his last India appearance against Australia in a T20I at Guwahati in 2023. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar said the decision was driven purely by form. "He bats at the top in white-ball cricket and has been in good form. He has played for India before. At the moment, there are players like Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel ahead of him, but we felt having a wicketkeeper who can open gives us more solidity,"

The statement performance came in the final, where Kishan smashed a blistering 101 off just 49 balls, setting up a historic title win for Jharkhand. It underlined a sharp turnaround for a player whose career had stalled after stepping away from the game in 2023, citing mental fatigue following extended periods on the bench.

Reflecting on his selection, Kishan told ANI, "It feels good to be picked in the squad. I'm very, very happy," admitting it wasn't something he was expecting.

December has been a defining month in Kishan's journey. In 2022, he scripted history with a double century in ODIs at Chattogram. A year later came the break from cricket. In 2024, a renewed focus on process and performance marked his return to form. Now, in 2025, the domestic grind has brought him back into the national reckoning.

Kishan will join the team as the second wicketkeeper, with Sanju Samson the preferred choice behind the stumps, as India prepare for their T20 title defence. Opportunities may be limited initially, but with momentum on his side and competition ever-present, Kishan has once again put himself in the conversation - a reminder that in Indian cricket, form remains the strongest currency.

Sunny Shares Ikkis Wrap-Up Clip, Dharmendra Urges India And Pakistan To Watch

The late actor Dharmendra, who will be posthumously seen in the upcoming film Ikkis, once said that he wishes that people of both India and Pakistan watches the film.

On Saturday, the late actor's elder son Sunny Deol took to his Instagram, and shared a BTS video from Ikkis. In the video, Dharmendra said, “I'm extremely happy to be in the Mandav films. The team, the captain, Shriram ji. It was done in a very nice way”.

He further mentioned, “I think India and Pakistan both should see the film. I'm a bit happily sad today, the last day of shooting. I love you all, if I made any mistake, please forgive me”.

Sunny wrote in the caption, “A smile that lit up the darkness. Generosity without limits. Love for my papa is deeply rooted in our hearts. He has blessed us with his final film, Ikkis. Let's celebrate him in movie halls this New Year”.

Ikkis is directed by Sriram Raghavan, and is based on the life of Arun Khetarpal, one of India's youngest Param Vir Chakra awardees, who was martyred during the 1971 Indo-Pak war at the age of 21.

The title directly refers to Khetarpal's age at the time of his death. The lead role is played by Agastya Nanda, marking a significant departure from conventional debut choices, as the film prioritises realism over spectacle. Veteran actor Dharmendra appears in a key role, adding generational weight to the narrative.

The film focuses on military discipline, battlefield decision-making, and personal courage rather than melodrama. Staying true to historical accounts, the film aims to portray the human cost of war while honouring a real-life hero whose bravery continues to hold national significance.

Why India's Middle Class Can't Buy Homes, Even With Higher Salaries

Many middle-class Indians today are finding it harder than ever to buy homes, not because they earn too little, but because asset prices have far outpaced salary growth over the past few decades.

Akshat Shrivastava, a hedge fund manager and founder of financial education platform Wisdom Hatch, compares a Rs 3,500 monthly salary in 1990 to today's median salary of Rs 27,000-Rs 29,400.

On the surface, that looks like growth. But adjusted for 6% annual inflation, Rs 3,500 in 1990 holds roughly the same purchasing power as Rs 27,000 today.

That, Shrivastava argues, is the root of the issue: while salaries have generally kept pace with inflation, they haven't matched the pace of asset price growth, especially in real estate. "While the salaries are compounding very slowly in India, the asset prices: houses, land, gold, stocks have been growing at a much faster rate," he wrote.

He calls this trend asset price appreciation, and notes that it's eroding the middle class's ability to achieve traditional financial goals, particularly homeownership.

The data backs this up. According to NoBroker and PwC, house prices in India's top metros: Mumbai, Delhi, and parts of Bengaluru have grown at 10-11% annually between 2000 and 2020. Nationally, average house-price growth has been closer to 6% per year, with significant regional variation.

Incomes haven't kept pace. India's nominal per-capita GDP rose from around USD 1,450 in 2013 to USD 2,256 in 2023-a growth rate of 4-5% annually in dollar terms. While rupee-based income growth is slightly higher, it still trails the double-digit property price inflation seen in many Tier-1 cities.

Shrivastava traces part of the issue to post-2008 changes in global finance. Debt became more accessible, and consumer borrowing surged. "Debt is encouraged," he noted, pointing out that many of India's leading fintech startups have moved into lending as a core business.

"When people take more debt and trade an asset more, the price amplifies further," he explained. As more buyers enter the market with borrowed funds, prices inflate even further, worsening affordability.

"People who get this are amplifying their wealth. People who don't, keep questioning why the prices of everything keeps going up," he added.

While the trend isn't uniform across India or over time, in most urban centres, especially metros, the gap between what people earn and what homes cost has grown steadily, reshaping what financial stability looks like for the middle class.

Indian Armed Forces Are NDTV Indian Of The Year 2025

Following a phenomenal display of valour, coordination and pinpoint precision during Operation Sindoor, the Indian Armed Forces have been named NDTV's Indian Of The Year for 2025.

In May, the Armed Forces struck terror bases in at least nine locations in Pakistan - including the headquarters of the Lashkar-e-Taiba in Muridke and Jaish-e-Mohammed in Bahawalpur - as part of the Operation, which was a response to the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, in which 26 people were killed.

Pakistan responded by attempting to attack Indian military installations and civilian locations by launching drones and missiles on three successive days, but was thwarted by India's air defence systems. The Indian Armed Forces, in turn, first took out some of Pakistan's air defence systems, including in Lahore, and then struck key military bases like the all-important Nur Khan airbase, also known as the Chaklala airbase.

Pakistan then sought a ceasefire and India agreed to a pause in hostilities.

As NDTV presented the armed forces with the honour, on stage were Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, the Chief of Integrated Defence Staff, Vir Chakra Awardees Colonel Koshank Lamba, Lieutenant Colonel Sushil Bisht, Naib Subedar Satish Kumar, Group Captain Manish Arora, Group Captain Kunal Kalra and Wing Commander Joy Chandra, and Nao Sena Medal gallantry awardee Commander Saurabh Kumar.

Air Marshal Dixit said the jointness of the services really took off after the Chief of Defence Staff was appointed. "In the last three to four years, we have worked very hard to achieve this jointness, and the result is in front of you. Jointness is not a slogan, it involves a lot of planning, taking action together and taking responsibility together. Communication, control of the escalation ladder... we have now learnt to do all of these things together. We have seen a small example, and we will see many more in the years to come," he said.

The Chief of Integrated Defence Staff said India's self-reliance was also on display during Operation Sindoor in terms of air defence systems and missiles.

Calm Before The Storm

Asked about his most memorable moments from the Operation, Colonel Koshank Lamba said he remembered the time just before it was launched.

"There was an eerie calm, which was a calm just before the storm we were about to unleash. In that moment, when I spoke to my men. I was thinking I would probably find fear or confusion or apprehension, but I saw a lot of 'josh', a lot of confidence, and I saw a fire. That was the fire we unleashed," he said.

Naib Subedar Satish Kumar said he faced his biggest challenge during Operation Sindoor when his mortar position was fired upon by two enemy mortar positions.

"Engaging two targets from one mortar position is very difficult, but I had four mortars, which I used to target both - two on each... Then I fired illumination and smoke rounds on three posts, which caused a fire across a 300-400-metre area and 30-35 mine blasts," he recounted.

'Begging For Mercy'

Group Captain Manish Arora said he was struck by how young men and women in his unit were raring to go. "That day, the room was slightly different. There was a calmness and stillness to them. When we looked each other in the eyes, we knew we were the answer to the tears of the 26 families who lost their loved ones (in the Pahalgam attack)... After four days of intense conflict, the enemy was on all fours, begging for mercy. It was a perfect display of professionalism and willpower," he said.

Group Captain Kunal Kalra said his proudest moment during Operation Sindoor was when his weapons left his aircraft and he saw them zoning in on the targets. "These weapons were carrying the nation's hope and prayers."

Sydney Shooter Underwent Training On 'How To Hunt' At Gun Club For 5 Years

Naveed Akram, the younger of the two shooters who killed 15 people on Sydney's Bondi Beach, took training at a shooting club in "firearms safety" and "how to hunt". The president of the club, Vanja Kuzet told a Serbian publication that Akram had attended the club five years ago.

Speaking to Blic, Kuzet said that Akram came for "safety training, i.e., how to hunt in New South Wales" and added, "We neither support nor associate with such crimes, and it is terrible what happened."

The club was situated about 50 kilometres from Bondi, and Kuzet said that it was a "hunting association" that held gatherings and social events.

Naveed Akram, 24, along with his father, Sajid Akram, 50, slaughtered 15 people on Sunday in an antisemitic mass shooting targeting Jews celebrating Hanukkah at Bondi Beach, and more than 20 other people are still being treated in hospitals. All of those killed by the gunmen who have been identified so far were Jewish.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese promised a sweeping crackdown to banish the "evil of antisemitism from our society".

"It is clear we need to do more to combat this evil scourge," he told reporters.

This included new powers to target extremist preachers and to refuse or cancel visas for those who spread hate and division.

The news that the suspects were apparently inspired by the Islamic State group provoked more questions about whether Australia's government had done enough to stem hate-fuelled crimes, especially directed at Jews. In Sydney and Melbourne, where 85% of Australia's Jewish population lives, a wave of antisemitic attacks has been recorded in the past year.

Kristin Cabot Breaks Silence On "Bad Decision" After Coldplay Kiss Cam Scandal

Kristin Cabot, former HR executive at Astronomer, has finally broken her silence about the viral incident where she was caught in a close embrace with her then-boss, CEO Andy Byron, at a Coldplay concert in July. While speaking to The New York Times, she said that the embarrassing moment was a "bad decision".

The incident, which sparked widespread media attention and public scrutiny, led to Cabot's resignation and divorce proceedings. In different interviews published on Thursday, she expressed regret and took accountability for her actions, stating she "gave up her career" as a consequence.

"I made a bad decision and had a couple of High Noons and danced and acted inappropriately with my boss," she told NYT.

"And it's nothing. And I took accountability, and I gave up my career for that. That's the price I chose to pay."

"This can't be the final word"

Cabot, a 53-year-old mother of two, revealed she had a "big happy crush" on Byron, and they shared their first and only kiss at the concert. Both were separated from their spouses at the time. She faced intense backlash, including death threats and online harassment, labelling her a "homewrecker" and "gold digger".

In a separate interview, she told the Times of London, "I could have been struck by lightning, I could have won the lottery, or this could have happened."

"But I'm not some celebrity, I'm just a mom from New Hampshire," she added.

"Even if I did have an affair, it's not anybody's business."

"It has been like a scarlet letter; people erased everything I'd accomplished in my life and achieved in my career. This can't be the final word."

While speaking to UK Times, she said she had "become a meme", and the backlash made her "unemployable". "I was the most maligned HR manager in HR history."

"I wanted to put a cute outfit on and go out and dance and laugh and have a great night," she told the NYT.

"And that's how it was tracking. Some inside part of my brain might have been jumping up and down and waving its arms, saying, 'Don't do this,'" she said.

She said that she was "on top of the world" when she was caught on camera. "We were sitting in the back of the stadium at the opposite end from the stage in the pitch black, just feeling totally anonymous in an arena of 50, 60,000 people," she told the UK Times.

"We were just dancing, I'd had a few High Noons. Andy was standing behind me, and we were dancing, and I grabbed him," Cabot continued.

"My immediate reaction was..."

Byron and Cabot were seen on the jumbotron, standing draped in each other's arms. They moved away, shielding their faces, when the camera focused on them. "I didn't hear the announcement that the jumbotron was coming, so suddenly I'm just seeing us on screen."

"My immediate reaction was, 'Holy s-t, Andrew's here,'" Cabot said about her former partner as she had an idea that he was also at the concert.

"We were in the middle of an incredibly - and amazingly - amicable separation. I was worried I would embarrass him. He's an amazing guy and does not deserve that.

"Then a beat later, my mind turns to, 'Oh God, Andy's my effing boss,' this is a bad look. Boston's not a big town. And while it wasn't an Astronomer event or anything, there could have been investors or other staff there."

As a woman, I took the "bulk of the abuse"

Byron, who also resigned, has reportedly received criticism from former employees, calling him a "toxic boss".

"I think as a woman, as women always do, I took the bulk of the abuse. People would say things like I was a 'gold-digger' or I 'slept my way to the top,' which just couldn't be further from reality. The amount I sacrificed to get where I did in my career, the amount of hands I've had to take off my ass over the years, comments I've had to swat away from men," she added.

Cabot hopes her story teaches her children that mistakes happen, and one error doesn't define their worth.

3,746 Challaned, 61,000 PUCs Issued On Day 1 Of 'No PUC, No Fuel' In Delhi

Delhi's 'No PUC, No Fuel' directive came into force across the national capital on Thursday amid claims of strict enforcement. Thousands of challans were issued, border checks intensified, and surprise inspections were carried out by the Environment Minister. But on the ground, enforcement appeared uneven, and the city's air quality only deteriorated through the day.

The overall AQI stood at 356 around 7 am and worsened to 397 by 9 pm, inching closer to the 'severe' category despite a full day of restrictions and checks.

Certificates Issued, But Pollution Persists

Official data shows over 61,000 Pollution Under Control Certificates (PUCCs) were issued between December 17 and 18 - 29,938 on Wednesday and another 31,974 by Thursday evening. During the same 24-hour window, 3,746 vehicles were challaned for not carrying a valid PUCC.

At Delhi's entry points, joint teams of the Traffic Police and Transport Department checked around 5,000 vehicles, turning back 568 non-compliant vehicles and diverting 217 non-destined trucks via the Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressways.

Despite these measures, there was no corresponding improvement in air quality through the day.

No Enforcement At Several Petrol Pumps

An NDTV ground reality check found that enforcement of the 'No PUC, No Fuel' rule was missing at several petrol pumps on day one.

At the Delhi Gate petrol pump, NDTV found the government notification prominently displayed across fuel dispensing aisles, clearly informing motorists that a valid Pollution Under Control certificate was mandatory for refuelling. However, no transport or enforcement officials were present at the pump at the time of NDTV's visit.

Petrol pump staff said officials had made only a brief appearance earlier in the day.

"Two DTC officials came in the morning, clicked some photos, and left. After that, we don't know where they are," a pump employee told NDTV.

The staff was also clear that they are not responsible for enforcing the rule.

"We are just informing customers about the rule. We are not the enforcing authority. These are our customers. If we try to enforce it, there will be arguments or fights, and we don't want that," the employee said.

'Even 80% Implementation Is Success'

Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, who conducted surprise inspections at select petrol pumps, acknowledged that the rule may not be implemented uniformly everywhere on day one.

Speaking to NDTV, Sirsa said, "Even if 80% is implemented, it will be successful."

He also said he was receiving regular, real-time updates from the Transport Department on the status of enforcement at petrol pumps across the capital, indicating that the government was closely tracking compliance as the rule rolled out.

'This Is Not About Challans'

Sirsa urged petrol pump staff to remain calm while informing commuters about the requirement.

"You are the first interface of this campaign on the ground... politely explain that this rule is for their own health and for the health of our children," he told them.

Addressing commuters, the minister added, "This is not about challans; this is about clean air. Every valid PUCC issued today is a small victory in our war against pollution."

Impact Of Dust, Waste Action Unclear

Civic agencies also reported action on other pollution fronts over the past 24 hours, including mechanised sweeping of 2,300 km of roads, deployment of mobile anti-smog guns across 5,524 km, closure of 132 illegal dumping points, and processing of over 38,000 metric tonnes of legacy waste.

Even so, Delhi's AQI climbed steadily through the day, raising questions about how quickly such measures can translate into relief during peak winter pollution.

Sirsa said the steps were unavoidable, adding, "The Delhi Government has had to adopt tough but necessary steps so that pollution levels can be visibly reduced." He also flagged that several private offices are yet to comply with the 50% work-from-home advisory under GRAP-IV, warning that non-compliance could invite action.

As Delhi heads into another polluted night, the first full day of the 'No PUC, No Fuel' rule once again underlined a familiar gap—strong enforcement claims, partial implementation on the ground, and air quality that continues to worsen.

Maharashtra's 'Rummy' Minister Resigns Hours After Conviction In 1995 Case

Maharashtra Sports Minister and NCP leader Manikrao Kokate resigned, hours after a court upheld his conviction in a three-decade-old housing scam case, triggering political churn within the state's ruling Mahayuti alliance and intensifying pressure on Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.

Kokate, who held the sports portfolio and was later left without charge following earlier controversies, stepped down on Wednesday after a Nashik sessions court confirmed a two-year prison sentence against him. The Maharashtra Sports Ministry is now under Ajit Pawar's charge.

Kokate and his brother, Vijay Kokate, were convicted in a case dating back to 1995, relating to the alleged misuse of a 10 per cent quota meant for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) in a housing scheme. The brothers were found guilty of offences including cheating and forgery.

The sessions court upheld the sentence earlier awarded by a magistrate, paving the way for Kokate's possible disqualification from the Maharashtra legislature. Under election law, a conviction of two years or more attracts immediate disqualification unless stayed by a higher court.

Following the verdict, an arrest warrant was issued against the minister. His lawyer subsequently approached the Bombay High Court seeking an urgent hearing. The court said it would take up the matter on Friday. Later in the day, Kokate was admitted to Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital, temporarily shielding him from arrest.

Kokate made headlines earlier this year after being found playing rummy on his mobile phone in the state assembly.

Political Pressure On Ajit Pawar

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar cancelled his scheduled election engagements and held meetings with senior leaders of the NCP, which he heads. He also met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to brief him on the situation.

Sources said Fadnavis sought clarity on contingency plans within the cabinet if Kokate's conviction is not stayed. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiv Sena are understood to have insisted on Kokate's exit, arguing that the government could not afford to be seen as protecting a convicted minister.

According to sources, Kokate's resignation letter has not yet been received by the Chief Minister. As a result, the Mahayuti has also stripped Kokate of his portfolios, similar to how Nawab Malik was kept as a minister without a portfolio during the Mahavikas Aghadi government.

Opposition Alleges Double Standards

Opposition parties moved quickly to criticise the government, accusing it of selective action. Leaders from the Congress and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP faction questioned why Kokate had not been immediately disqualified, drawing comparisons with earlier cases involving Rahul Gandhi and former Maharashtra minister Sunil Kedar, where disqualifications followed soon after court verdicts.

They argued that the ruling alliance was applying different standards depending on political convenience.

Dhananjay Munde-Amit Shah Meet

The Kokate episode coincided with a surprise meeting in Delhi between senior NCP leader Dhananjay Munde and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, fuelling speculation of a possible cabinet reshuffle.

Munde, who resigned as a minister in March after his close associate was linked to a murder case in Beed district, has recently resumed public activity ahead of local body elections. However, he dismissed political interpretations of the meeting, saying his visit had been pre-planned.

In a post on X, Munde said he had sought the inclusion of the Prabhu Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga pilgrimage site in Parli Vaidyanath under the Centre's PRASHAD scheme.

Flipperachi Reveals What Life After Akshaye Khanna Made FA9LA Viral Is Like

Bahraini rapper Flipperachi, whose track FA9LA has taken the internet by storm, has opened up about how dramatically life has changed since Akshaye Khanna grooved to the beats of his song in Dhurandhar.

What began as a standalone hip-hop release has now transformed into a global phenomenon.

Speaking to NDTV's Aditya Raj Kaul, Flipperachi reflected on how the film played a crucial role in catapulting FA9LA into the mainstream.

"The movie came in, picked it up, and I mean, the rest is history," he said.

The rapper admitted that the scale of the song's success caught him completely off guard, particularly in India, where the track has dominated reels, memes, and music charts.

"I honestly didn't expect it to blow up like this," Flipperachi shared. "People don't really understand what I'm saying lyrically, but the beat is powerful, and that is crazy. It connected with them. It really got to them."

FA9LA, also known as Faasla, blends Arabic hip-hop with Indian tabla percussion - a fusion that Flipperachi now realises was key to its widespread appeal. Still, he insists he never imagined the song would resonate so deeply with Indian listeners.

"To have this kind of impact - I wouldn't have believed in a thousand years that it would blow up in India," he said. "Yes, it has Indian flavour in it, but I didn't know it would rise to this level."

Beyond India, the rapper pointed out that Dhurandhar's global success has helped the track travel far beyond language barriers.

"The film has done incredibly well globally, not just in India," he noted. "It's a Hindi-language film, but people all across the world are watching it. It's right at the top of the charts."

Social media has played a massive role in sustaining the song's popularity, with thousands of reels and memes continuing to surface weeks after the film's release.

"There have been so many reels and memes coming in," Flipperachi said. "I've been reposting as many as I can, but my DMs are blowing up. I honestly can't keep up."

From a viral beat to a cultural moment, FA9LA's journey reflects the growing power of cross-cultural collaborations in cinema and music.

Meanwhile, Dhurandhar hit the big screens on December 5 and shattered several box office records. Apart from Akshaye Khanna and Ranveer Singh, the movie features Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, Sara Arjun, and several others in prominent roles.
