US Model Who Lost Her Lip In Dog Attack Shares Pics Of Transformation

A 23-year-old model, Brooklinn Khoury, who lost her lip in a dog attack in the US has shared pictures of her transformation. Ms Khoury was attacked by her cousin's pit bull in 2020 and had to undergo six cosmetic surgeries to reconstruct her smile.

She recently shared a series of progression pictures on Instagram to show her transformation.

See pictures here:

In 2020, Ms Khoury had been out with her cousin and her pit bull when the dog attacked her.

"I was like, 'You're such a good boy.' He literally sprung from a sitting position onto my face. I was standing, and he was sitting - he literally just sprung up. And he was literally, hanging - literally like arms, legs hanging off of my lip. And my first instinct was like, 'Oh my God, get on the ground with him, hold his head, go wherever he goes," she recalled to People in 2021.

Distressing images from the attack posted on Instagram show her with no top lip and she claims she still finds them difficult to look at. In a post, she wrote, “I don't expect anyone to understand because how could you. I don't know how to explain the way that I feel when I look in the mirror. It's as if I'm a stranger, embodied in someone I've known before. ''

Post the attack, she underwent six surgeries, some of which lasted 20 hours, to give her a new upper lip. The doctor took skin and nerves from her arm to create a fully functional new upper lip.

''If you were to tell me a year ago I'd have the smile I have today, I wouldn't believe you. I lost so much hope waiting a whole year to find the surgeon I have today. It's been such a hard yet beautiful process. I am so thankful for everyone in my life. This is a reminder to trust the process. Timing is absolutely everything,'' she wrote in another post.

She is almost fully healed but is expected to have one more surgery later this month.

Adani Ports To Repay $605 Million Debt, Capital Expenditure To Halve

Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. will repay a debt of around 50 billion rupees ($604.6 million) as Gautam Adani takes steps to improve a leverage metric and corporate governance at his firms following a short seller attack that has put its financial health under scrutiny.

The repayment in the year starting in April will improve net debt to earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization ratio to about 2.5 times, the company said in an earnings statement on Tuesday. The ratio stands at just over 3 times currently.

India's largest private sector ports operator, which reported an earnings miss in the latest quarterly earnings, also said it would roughly halve its capital expenditure next financial year, compared with the current year.

"To uphold the principles of good corporate governance, the management of Adani group entities are considering the appointment of independent firms/agencies" to look into the issues of regulatory compliance around related party transactions and internal controls, among others, according to filings from Ambuja Cements Ltd. and Adani Green Energy Ltd., both part of the ports-to-power conglomerate. "The management will assess the necessary actions required, if any."

These developments come just a day after the billionaire and his family prepaid $1.11 billion worth of borrowings backed by shares in three group companies, including Adani Ports, to allay investor fears. The conglomerate's finances have come under scrutiny after US short-seller Hindenburg Research levied accusations of accounting fraud and market manipulation at the Adani Group, wiping more than $100 billion from its market capitalization.

Adani Group has repeatedly denied the charges.

'Ease Concerns'

The Adani Ports guidance "could ease concerns around the firm's liquidity and debt, though governance and regulatory risks are likely to linger," Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Sharon Chen wrote. "This could also offer assurance that it might not materially increase related-party loans to support the rest of the group, as free cash flows have been earmarked for debt repayment."

Listed firms of the Adani conglomerate, which was forced to shelve a $2.5 billion share sale by its flagship Adani Enterprises Ltd. last week as the short seller's allegations triggered a massive stock rout, have begun reporting December quarter earnings this week as investors look for cues on the robustness of the companies' operations.

Adani Ports reported a 16% drop in profit to 13.2 billion rupees for the latest quarter, missing the analysts' estimate of about 15 billion rupees. Revenue rose 18% from the year-ago period to 47.9 billion rupees but also fell short of the estimates. Capital spending for the year starting April is pegged between 40 billion rupees and 45 billion rupees.

Sister Firms

Billionaire Adani's two other firms that reported earnings on Tuesday show strong growth in profits.

Profit at Adani Green Energy, one of the most levered companies in the conglomerate, more than doubled to 1.03 billion rupees, up from 490 million rupees in the same quarter last year. Total income surged 54% to 22.6 billion rupees while total costs rose 45%, the company said in an exchange filing. The renewables firm is on track to complete 8,300 megawatts of capacity by March, it said, adding that bond covenants are within stipulated limits.

Ambuja Cements, the larger of the two local cement makers that Adani Group acquired last year from Holcim Ltd., posted a larger-than-expected quarterly profit at 3.69 billion rupees, up 46% from the year-ago period. Revenue rose 10% and matched estimates at 41.3 billion rupees, according to a separate filing.

The cement maker remains debt-free and expects "cement demand to further grow in coming quarters on the back of increased infrastructure activities," its Chief Executive Officer, Ajay Kapur, said in the filing.

Adani Transmission Ltd. posted an earnings beat on Monday as net income surged 78% - the only other group firm that has announced its results so far.

Tremors From Powerful Quake In Turkey Felt As Far Away As Greenland

Tremors from the powerful earthquake that rocked Turkey and neighbouring Syria on Monday were felt as far away as Greenland, the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland said.

"The large earthquakes in Turkey were clearly registered on the seismographs in Denmark and Greenland," seismologist Tine Larsen told AFP.

The first 7.8-magnitude quake struck at 04:17 am (0117 GMT) at a depth of about 17.9 kilometres (11 miles) near the Turkish city of Gaziantep, which is home to around two million people, the US Geological Survey said.

"The waves from the earthquake reached the seismograph on the Danish island of Bornholm approximately five minutes after the shaking started," Larsen said.

"Eight minutes after the earthquake, the shaking reached the east coast of Greenland, propagating further through all of Greenland," she added.

Later, another 7.5-magnitude quake struck southeastern Turkey.

"We have registered both earthquakes -- and a lot of aftershocks -- in Denmark and Greenland," she said.

Monday's quake is the deadliest in Turkey since a 7.4-magnitude one in 1999 when more than 17,000 people died, including about 1,000 in Istanbul.

"I'm Lucky": Salman Rushdie On Surviving "Colossal" Knife Attack

Salman Rushdie, the Mumbai-born author of Booker Prize-winning novel 'Midnight's Children', said on Monday that he feels lucky to have survived the last year's brutal stabbing at a literary event in the US as he spoke for the first time about the "colossal attack".

The 75-year-old British American novelist was giving a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution in New York - where he is based - on August 12 last year when a man reached the stage and stabbed and punched him several times.

In his first interview since the attack which has caused loss of vision in one eye, the author told 'The New Yorker' magazine that his main feeling was one of gratitude to those who showed their support and his family, including sons Zafar and Milan.

"I'm lucky. What I really want to say is that my main overwhelming feeling is gratitude," Mr Rushdie told the magazine.

"I'm able to get up and walk around. When I say I'm fine, I mean, there are bits of my body that need constant checkups. It was a colossal attack," he said.

Asked if he felt it had been a mistake to let his guard down in New York, years after the fatwa by Iran's former supreme leader Ayatollah Khomeini called on Muslims to assassinate the author over the allegedly "blasphemous" novel 'The Satanic Verses', he replied: "Well, I'm asking myself that question, and I don't know the answer to it. I did have more than 20 years of life. So, is that a mistake?" "Also, I wrote a lot of books. 'The Satanic Verses' was my fifth published book - my fourth published novel - and this ['Victory City'] is my twenty-first. So, three-quarters of my life as a writer has happened since the fatwa. In a way, you can't regret your life," he added.

The celebrated author told the magazine that he was very moved by the tributes that his near-death inspired and is determined to look forward.

"It's very nice that everybody was so moved by this, you know? I had never thought about how people would react if I was assassinated, or almost assassinated," he said.

"I've tried very hard over these years to avoid recrimination and bitterness. I just think it's not a good look. One of the ways I've dealt with this whole thing is to look forward and not backwards. What happens tomorrow is more important than what happened yesterday," he added.

"She kind of took over at a point when I was helpless," he said of his wife, poet and novelist Rachel Eliza Griffiths.

His latest novel, 'Victory City', completed before the attack, traces back to a trip decades ago to Hampi, the site in Karnataka of the ruins of the medieval Vijayanagara empire.

"The first kings of Vijayanagara announced, quite seriously, that they were descended from the moon... It's like saying, 'I've descended from the same family as Achilles.' Or Agamemnon. And so, I thought, well, if you could say that, I can say anything," the author said.

Mr Rushdie's attacker Hadi Matar is being held in the Chautauqua County Jail in the village of Mayville, charged with attempted murder in the second degree and facing a lengthy prison sentence.

"Shouldn't Talk About What's Fair": Ex-Pak Captain's Retort To Ian Healy

Former Pakistan captain and batter Salman Butt has lashed out at the Australian cricket team and Ian Healy for the latter's controversial statement regarding Indian pitches. Australia are gearing up to play a four-match Test series in India against the hosts, starting February 9 in Nagpur. Healy had said that if India offered a 'fair pitch' in which there is consistent spin, without the ball "jumping ridiculously and sliding down low from day one", then Australia will end up on the winning side. The ex-Australia wicketkeeper-batter had added that if 'unfair pitch' is offered then India would play better than the visiting team in those conditions.

Commenting on Healy's statement, Butt said that the Australian team has a habit of complaining and calling it 'unfair' if the pitches don't favour them.

"When subcontinent teams travel to Australia, they don't complain about the pitches. They don't say there's extra bounce pitch and that it's unfair. There are different home conditions and you have to get used to those. Teams face difficulties in Perth, likewise, they also face problems against spin. So, you shouldn't talk about what's fair or unfair. The pitch is giving results. If the other team is winning on the same pitch that means they are performing better than you," said Butt on his official YouTube channel.

"But ye aadat bhi hai. Unko samajh naa aaye toh fair nahi hota (It's their habit. If they can't understand the pitch, they call it unfair)," he added.

Earlier, commenting on the statement of Healy, Ashwin had said that the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy needs such type of 'spark'.

The visiting Australian team is currently training at the Karnataka Cricket Association Stadium ground in Alur after opting out of practice matches.

US Working To Recover Suspected Chinese Spy Balloon

The US military said on Sunday it is searching for remnants of the suspected Chinese surveillance balloon it shot down the previous day, in a dramatic spy saga that has further strained American-Chinese relations.

The US Navy is working to recover the balloon and its payload and the Coast Guard is providing security for the operation, said General Glen VanHerck, commander of the North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command.

A successful recovery could potentially give the United States insight into China's spying capabilities, though US officials have downplayed the balloon's impact on national security.

A US Air Force fighter jet on Saturday shot down the balloon off the coast of South Carolina, a week after it first entered U.S. airspace near Alaska. VanHerck said the incident took place over U.S. territorial waters.

China protested the response as an "obvious overreaction", but analysts said that any counter-move by Beijing will likely be finely calibrated to keep from worsening ties.

Republican lawmakers on Sunday criticized President Joe Biden for waiting days to shoot down the balloon as it floated over the United States, accusing him of showing weakness toward China and initially trying to keep the breach of U.S. airspace undisclosed.

"I think part of it is the president's reluctance to take any action that would be viewed as provocative or confrontational towards the Chinese communists," said Republican Tom Cotton, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Former President Donald Trump and his former national intelligence director, John Ratcliffe, denied Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin's assessment that similar balloons had transited the United States during his presidency.

"China had too much respect for 'TRUMP' for this to have happened, and it NEVER did," Trump wrote on social media site Truth Social.

But Republican Representative Michael Waltz backed up Austin, telling the Washington Post that the Pentagon had notified Congress that Chinese balloons were spotted near the United States several times during Trump's tenure.

He said balloons had been spotted near Texas and twice near Florida, as well as previously known sightings near Hawaii and Guam.

Democrats said Biden's decision to wait to shoot down the balloon until it had passed over the United States protected civilians from debris crashing to Earth.

"The president called for this to be dealt with in a way that balanced all of the different risks. That's exactly what happened," U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said on CNN's "State of the Union" program.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer dismissed the Republican criticism as "premature and political."

"The bottom line here is that shooting down the balloon over water wasn't just the safest option, but it was the one that maximized our intel gain," he said at a news conference.

The Pentagon will brief senators on the balloon and Chinese surveillance on Feb. 15, Schumer said.

Republican Mike Turner, chairman of the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee, said he believed China was using the balloon to figure out how to counter U.S. nuclear weapons and missile defense systems.

"The president has allowed this to go across our most sensitive sites and wasn't even going to tell the American public," Turner said on NBC's "Meet the Press" program.

Republican Marco Rubio, vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, told the ABC News program "This Week" that China was trying to send a message that it could enter U.S. airspace. Rubio said he doubted that the balloon's debris would be of much intelligence value.
