"Ek Akela Kitno Ko Bhari": PM Modi Hits Back At Opposition In Rajya Sabha

Launching a scathing attack on Congress and other opposition parties who have been targeting him, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said "one person is proving too much for so many" and that more muck is raised by the parties opposed to the BJP, the more the party's symbol lotus will bloom.

PM Modi, who faced constant sloganeering from the opposition in Rajya Sabha during his reply to the debate on the motion of thanks to the President's Address, took potshots at the Nehru-Gandhi family, saying he had read that over 600 schemes were named after its members and asked why people from their generation don't keep Nehru as their surname and what was the "fear and shame".

With opposition parties accusing the Centre of politics against non-BJP state governments, PM Modi said that it was the Congress that had rampantly misused Article 356 and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had used it 50 times to oust non-Congress governments.

He also targeted Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, who had made several accusations against the government on the Hindenburg-Adani row, and said that he was complaining about defeat when people of his constituency had voted him out after getting the benefit of central schemes.

The Prime Minister accused Congress of tokenism, vote-bank politics and not being interested in finding permanent solutions to problems.

With some opposition parties promising the return to old pension scheme and making some other promises, PM Modi cautioned states against fiscal indiscipline, reminding them how some countries were going through severe financial distress.

He said the government has set the target to achieve saturation levels in all schemes to benefit everyone during Amrit Kaal.

PM Modi said the government's aim is to provide permanent solutions for the problems faced by the citizens and empower them.

"We understand the importance of infrastructure, scale and speed for building a modern India," he said.

PM Modi spoke about the schemes and initiatives of the government for various sections including tribals, women and farmers.

PM Modi also took potshots at the Nehru-Gandhi family over several schemes and places named after their members and asked "why people from their generation don't keep Nehru as their surname".

"Some had problems with the names of schemes of govt and Sanskrit words in the names. I read in a report that 600 government schemes were in the Gandhi-Nehru family's name...I don't understand why people from their generation don't keep Nehru as their surname, what's the fear and shame?" he said.

The Prime Minister accused the opposition parties of playing political games and looking for way to save themselves.

"The country is watching that one person (leader) is proving too much for so many (ek akela kitno ko bhari pad raha hai). Even to chant slogans, they have to switch (in turns). I have been responding to their voices for over an hour in one voice," PM Modi said.

"This is because of (my) conviction. I live for the country. I am out to do something for the country. Those who play political games do not have that courage. They are looking for a way to save themselves," he added.

The Prime Minister said his government believes in cooperative federalism.

"We are accused of troubling the states. I have been the chief minister for a long time. I understand the meaning of federalism. We have stressed on cooperative, competitive federalism. We have kept in mind national progress in our policies and also regional aspirations. Those who are sitting in Opposition today, they had tampered with the rights of states," PM Modi said.

Opposition members kept raising slogans during PM Modi's speech over their demand for a joint parliamentary committee probe into the Hindenburg-Adani row.

PM Modi said Congress repeatedly misused Article 356.

"Look at the history, which party and people in power misused Article 356 the most? Elected governments were toppled 90 times, who were those who did that? A Prime minister used Article 356 fifty times, and scored a half-century and that name is Indira Gandhi. In Kerala Communist government was elected which wasn't liked by Pandit Nehru and was toppled," he said.

"In Tamil Nadu too, governments of veterans like MGR and Karunanidhi were dismissed by Congress people. Sharad Pawar's government was toppled too. We have seen what happened with NTR when he was in the US for treatment and attempts were made to topple his government. This was the level of Congress' politics. They troubled every regional leader," he added.

PM Modi, who was repeatedly cheered by BJP members, said that the country is made from the common man's sweat and courage and is not "any family's property".

"Some people will have to understand that this centuries-old country is a country made from the common man's sweat and courage. This country is not any family's property. We named the Khel Ratna award after Major Dhyan Chand. We named the islands in Andaman after Netaji. We are proud. There are some who do not leave an opportunity to demean the Army, we named islands after the recipients of Param Vir Chakra. This is our dedication. You have problems with it which is visible," he said.

Taking a dig at opposition members over their allegations concerning unemployment, PM Modi said that those who do not understand the difference between job and employment were seeking to give lectures.

"Employment was also discussed here. I am surprised that those who claim to have been in public life for the longest time do not know that there is a difference between a job and employment. Those who do not understand the difference preach to us. Attempts are being made to spread falsehood by talking about half-baked things to create new narratives," PM Modi said.

He talked about his government's strides towards green growth.

"In the past nine years, with the expansion of the economy, new opportunities have come up in new sectors. The way the country is moving forward towards a green economy, the possibilities of green jobs are increasing. Digital India is at a new height in the service sector. The 90,000 registered startups have also opened new doors for employment. More than 60 lakh new employees have benefited from Aatmanirbhar Bharat Yojana. We have opened various sectors through this Yojana," he said.

He also talked about start-ups and boost to self-reliance in the defence sector.

"It is very necessary for the country to become Aatmanirbhar in the defence sector. I am glad that we have proceeded with the mission of Aatmanirbharta in the defence sector. More than 350 private companies have come into the defence sector. The country is doing an export of nearly Rs 1 lakh crore in the defence sector.

Unprecedented employment has come up in this sector as well. From retail to tourism, every sector has grown," he said.

"There was pressure from people in the world to sell their vaccine in our market, articles were written, TV interviews were given. There were attempts till yesterday to insult our scientists but my country's scientists made vaccines that were approved & benefitted 150 countries," PM Modi added.

PM used poetry to attack the opposition. "Keechad uske pas hai, mere pas gulal...jo bhi jiske pas tha usne diya uchaal".

"I want to tell the Opposition MPs, the more 'keechad' (sludge) you will throw at us, the lotus will bloom even more. So, you all have an equal role in making the lotus bloom, and I think all of them for that," he said.

Talking of the development initiatives, he said in last 3-4 years, around 11 crore houses have got tap water connections.

"For the empowerment of common people, we started the Jan Dhan account movement. In the last nine years, 48 crore Jan Dhan accounts were opened across the country. On the other hand, the public is continuously "closing" your accounts, and you are taking out that frustration here," he added.

Taking a jibe at Mr Kharge, PM Modi said, "Kharge Ji complains that I visit Kalaburagi, he should see the work done there. More than 1.70 crore Jan Dhan bank accounts have opened in Karnataka including over 8 lakh accounts in Kalaburagi. So many people getting empowered, while someone's account getting closed, I can understand the pain."

Attacking Congress over its 'Gareebi Hatao' slogan, he said not much was done for decades.

"We work hard to meet the expectations and aspirations of the people of the country. True secularism is making sure that the benefits of different government schemes reach all eligible beneficiaries," he said.

PM Modi further emphasized that the government has identified 110 aspiration districts in the country.

"Education, infrastructure and health have improved in these districts due to continued focus and performance review. This has benefitted more than three crore tribals," he added.

PM Modi cautioned states against going on "wrong path" financially. The remarks come in the wake of some opposition parties going back to old pension scheme against expert advice.

"Today those who do not understand economic policies in the country, who do not think of anything other than politics 24 hours a day, who only see the work of public life in playing the games of power, have converted economic policies into disastrous policies," he said.

"I want to warn them with the sincerity of the House that they (Opposition) should go to their respective states and tell them not to move on the wrong path. You are seeing the condition of our neighbouring countries. How countries were drowned by taking loans indiscriminately. Some states have resorted to taking the immediate benefits. This will destroy them, they will also destroy the country," the Prime Minister added.

He noted that there are political differences among parties, and urged them not to play with the economic health of the country.

"We may have political, and ideological differences, and parties may have few complaints against each other, but don't play with the economic health of the country. Do not commit such a sin that takes away the rights of your children," he said.

The Prime Minister said as opposed to the earlier times, his government's aim is to provide permanent solutions for the citizens and empower them.

He said while it was the responsibility of the government in the earlier times to provide solutions to the people's problems, they had different priorities and intentions.

The Prime Minister cited the example of the water issue and explained that instead of tokenism, a holistic integrated approach of creating water infrastructure, water governance, quality control, water conservation, and irrigation innovation has been deployed.

"Similar measures have created permanent solutions in financial inclusion, DBT via Jan Dhan - Aadhar- Mobile, infrastructure planning and implementation via PM Gatishakti Masterplan," he said.

He emphasized that the working culture in the country has been transformed by the power of technology and the government is focused on increasing the speed and enhancing its scale.

The Prime Minister highlighted that the government has taken the significant step of achieving saturation in the Azadi Ka Amrit Kaal. He reiterated the efforts of the government where 100 per cent of benefits reach every beneficiary in the country.

The Prime Minister emphasized that "small farmers are the backbone of India's agriculture sector. "We are working to strengthen their hands."

The Prime Minister said that small farmers were neglected for a very long time. The Prime Minister also elaborated on the steps taken for women empowerment and talked about the government's initiative to empower, ensure dignity and create ease of living at every stage of a woman's life in India.

"With the expertise of our scientists and innovators, India is becoming a pharma hub of the world", the Prime Minister remarked as he drew attention to the unfortunate events when some people tried to let down India's scientists, innovators and vaccine manufacturers.

The Prime Minister talked about inculcating scientific temper through measures like Atal Innovation Mission and Tinkering lab. He complimented the youth and scientists for fully harnessing the opportunities created by the government and launching private satellites. "We have succeeded and are using technology for empowering common citizens", he said.

"The country today remains the world leader in digital transactions. The success of Digital India has drawn the attention of the whole world today", the Prime Minister said. He recalled the time when India used to import mobile phones and today these are being exported to other countries.

"It is our resolve that India becomes 'Viksti Bharat' by 2047", the Prime Minister remarked. "India is ready to take the giant leap and not look back anymore", the Prime Minister said.

"Sister Was Sleeping Next To Me": Orphaned Syria Boy Saved After 42 Hours

Rescuers working by torchlight pulled three-year-old Tariq Haidar from the rubble some 42 hours after a devastating earthquake destroyed his family home in the Syrian town of Jandaris. His family couldn't be saved.

Orphaned by the earthquake that hit Syria and Turkey in the dead of night on Monday, Haidar was brought to a hospital where doctors were forced to amputate his left leg. They are trying to save his right.

"As soon as he woke up, and saw us in front of him, he asked: 'Where is Miral?'. We asked 'Who is Miral?'. He said: 'My sister, she was sleeping next to me but she wasn't answering me'," said Malek Qasida, a nurse caring for him.

"They pulled out his father and two of his siblings before him, dead," added Qasida, speaking at the hospital where Haidar was in intensive care, his amputated leg heavily bandaged.

The bodies of his mother and a third sibling were recovered from the rubble later, people in the area said. His removal from the wreckage was the latest in a series of eye-catching rescues caught on camera in the areas in Syria and Turkey hit by the earthquake.

Jandaris was severely damaged by the quake, which has killed at least 1,930 people in rebel-held northwestern Syria, according to rescue workers. The Syrian government says the toll in its part of the fractured country is 1,347.

The death count in Turkey rose to 16,170 on Thursday.

The Syrian civil defence, the rescue service in the northwest, said on Thursday many families remain under the rubble. Qasida said: "There are hundreds of children still under the rubble."

Chinese Mother Takes Her Son To A Psychiatrist Every Year Because...

The pressure to get married and 'settle' in life is something that all Indians can relate to. However, this trend of relentless nagging from parents and relatives to get married is not something just limited to our country. In China, a woman was so concerned about her 38-year-old single son that she decided to take him to a psychiatric hospital to get him checked.

According to a report by South China Morning Post, the woman has been taking his son for a check-up at a psychiatric hospital every Lunar New Year since 2020.

The man, surnamed Wang, from the central Chinese province of Henan, recently shared his ordeal in a video, which has gone viral on social media websites in the country, sparking a debate about the pressure to marry. In the video, Mr Wang says that he never brought a girlfriend home on Lunar New Year which made his mother believe that ''he has something wrong in the head."

Just like every year, he was taken to the Henan Provincial Psychiatric Hospital on February 4. However, this time, something unexpected happened. The psychiatrist told her that her son was not ill and it was she who had a problem.

The doctor further noted that Mr Wang's mother had developed the mental disorder of ''forcing her son to marry.''

"I should not be identified as an unmarried person. I am just very busy and haven't met the right person. My mum can't sleep because I don't get married, so I feel quite upset," Mr Wang told SCMP. The dutiful son added that he went along with his mother's strange hospital fascination to please and reassure her.

Mr Wang, who works as a tennis coach, revealed that in his hometown, he is known by the phrase "super old single man". He also added that he has not saved enough money for a down payment on a home in Beijing. "Who would want to marry me?'' he asked.

'Bowled Rubbish': Australia Greats Criticise Pat Cummins After Poor Day 1

Australia were heavily outplayed by India on the first day of the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Nagpur on Thursday. Ravindrta Jadeja returned figures of 5-47 and fellow spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took three more to bowl out Australia for 177 in the final session on a turning wicket. In reply, India were 77 for one at stumps, with skipper Rohit Sharma on 56 and Ashwin, yet to score, at the crease. The hosts still trail Australia by 100 runs.

Rohit batted with ease on a pitch which a few Australian pundits suggested was "doctored" after reports said the bone-dry wicket was selectively watered to give undue advantage to the Indian spinners. For Australia, only Todd Murphy took a wicket dismissing KL Rahul. Australia skipper Pat Cummins returned with figures of 4-1-27-0. His performance was criticised by Australia greats Matthew Hayden and Mark Waugh.

"Pat Cummins, the captain of the side, playing away from home has to lead the side. He bowled rubbish today. He was too full and he didn't know where he was going with his line and length. If you look at the pitch map, it was way too much that was straying there as well. And it was just a matter of that momentum because Rohit Sharma was standing right at the other end. It does get away from you know," said Matthew Hayden.

"Pat Cummins in particular got nothing out of the surface, nothing through the air. It was tougher to bat against the new ball this morning and those two early wickets, of Khwaja really setback for Australia. Those two ducks and three guys for one(run). That's what you got to avoid when you play in India. That is getting out on low scores," said Mark Waugh.

"Pitch Is Playing Tricks": Australia Star Comments After India's Dominance

Australia batter Peter Handscomb on Thursday admitted that the Nagpur track "tricked" the visiting side as it did a lot less than what they had feared in the opening Test of the four-match series. Ravindra Jadeja (5/47) and Ravichandran Ashwin (3/42) shared eight wickets between them as Australia were bowled out for 177 in their first innings. Many Australian batters were out playing poor shots. Some of them played for the turn when there was none. India reached 77 for 1 at stumps on the opening day.

"It definitely wasn't easy out there. It's tough because when the pitch is playing tricks that starts to play with your mind a little bit as well," Handscomb said at the press conference after the opening day's play.

“The ball that doesn't do as much you expect to do a little bit more and that's where you can come undone with the ball that goes straight on, rather than the big turners we saw out there as well.” Handscomb, who scored 31 in the Australian innings, said the Indian team bowled really well as a unit and didn't give away easy runs.

“It's tough out there, Jadeja was obviously bowling very well, not really giving our batsmen a lot to hit and I found him tough to score (against),” the 31-year-old right- handed batter said.

For Handscomb, it was a comeback to the Test team after four years and he said he was feeling nice to play again in the longest format.

"I've worked really hard on a lot of things on my game, mentally, tactically and on my technique as well.

"To work that hard and get the rewards to come back in, it's a really, really nice feeling. I'm just grateful to be out there and give it a crack at time.”

Influencer Busted For Spending COVID-19 Relief Money On A Bentley And More

A Miami real estate broker and influencer has been busted for fraudulently using COVID-19 relief funds to fund her lavish lifestyle. According to New York Post, 31-year-old Daniela Rendon has been accused of using the pandemic relief money on a new Bentley, cosmetic procedures, a luxury apartment and much more.

Ms Rendon, who refers to herself as an 'Ultra Luxury' real estate agent on LinkedIn, was given $381,000 (Rs 3,15,00,298) through the Small Business Administration and Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), an initiative designed to help entrepreneurs for sustaining their businesses.

However, prosecutors claimed, that instead of using the cash to keep legitimate employees afloat amid the pandemic, she used the money for personal gain and splurged it on her friends and family. The money was used to lease a 2021 Bentley Bentayga, which is sold for around $181,000 (Rs 1,49,66,156). She also used the funds for buying designer shoes, luxury apartments, and cosmetic procedures, among other things.

Not only that, she was far from being discreet and showed off her opulent lifestyle on her Instagram profile. Ms. Rendon regularly posted pics of herself to her social media accounts wearing fancy clothes, going on tropical vacations and travelling on private jets. However, after her indictment, she deleted all of her social media profiles.

The influencer made her appearance in federal magistrate court on February 2 and was charged with fraudulently obtaining COVID-19 relief loans and grants under the Paycheck Protection Program.

Federal authorities stated that to pull off the scheme, Ms Rendon had falsified documents related to a real estate business to seem eligible for the PPP program. She now faces seven counts of wire fraud and money laundering that could land her in prison for up to 20 years.

A press release from the United States Department of Justice states, ''According to the charges, Rendon received approximately $381,000 in fraudulent funds. To disburse the funds, she is alleged to have enrolled with a payroll processor to issue fraudulent payroll checks to herself, family members, and friends. She is alleged to have used the fraudulently obtained funds to lease a 2021 Bentley Bentayga, rent a luxury Biscayne Bay apartment, pay for cosmetic dermatology procedures, and refinish her designer shoes.''

A judge set her bond at $150,000 after prosecutors deemed her to be a flight risk. She will now fight the charges against her.

"According To Aus Media...": Jaffer's Hilarious Dig On Nagpur Pitch Row

The India vs Australia first Test of the four-match series is all set to kick off on February 9 in Nagpur. The match that takes place at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium has caught limelight even before its start due to the controversy regarding its pitch that is going to be offered for the game. As per a report in Fox Cricket, reporters on the ground claimed that only the center of the Nagpur wicket was watered and rolled, whereas the exact area which will be targeted by left-handed spinners was left dry. Such a step was reportedly taken at both ends of the wicket, with accusations of there being an attempt to make things difficult for left-handers, like David Warner, Usman Khawaja, and Travis Head.

Several former Australian cricketers and experts have lashed out at India after the emergence of such reports. Amid the ongoing controversy regarding the pitch in Nagpur, former India batter Wasim Jaffer has taken a hilarious dig at the Australian media.

He shared a collage on Twitter, indicating that the Australian media has been treating the Nagpur pitch as if was an uneven surface of planet Mars.

See it here:

With the pitch being dry, spinners will understandably get plenty of help from the surface. The Indian team, hence is reportedly planning to play three spinners in the playing XI. However, the final decision, is yet to be made.

It is worth noting that the Rohit Sharma-led side has the likes of Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel at their disposal.

On the other hand, Australia -- who have toured with an 18-member squad -- have spin options in Ashton Agar, Nathan Lyon, Todd Murphy and Mitchell Swepson. Meanwhile, the likes of Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith are also available to bowl part-time spin for the guests.

Turkey President Admits "Shortcomings" As Over 15,000 Killed In Earthquake

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday conceded "shortcomings" after criticism of his government's response to the massive earthquake that has killed over 15,000 people in Turkey and Syria.

The sprawling scale of the disaster that flattened thousands of buildings, trapping an unknown number of people, has swamped relief operations already hampered by freezing weather.

Survivors have been left to scramble for food and shelter -- and in some cases watch helplessly as their relatives called for rescue, and eventually went silent under the debris.

"My nephew, my sister-in-law and my sister-in-law's sister are in the ruins. They are trapped under the ruins and there is no sign of life," said Semire Coban, a kindergarten teacher, in Turkey's Hatay.

"We can't reach them. We are trying to talk to them, but they are not responding... We are waiting for help. It has been 48 hours now," she said.

Still, searchers kept pulling survivors from the debris three days after the 7.8 magnitude quake that is already one of the deadliest this century, even as the death toll continues to rise.

As criticism mounted online, Erdogan visited one of the hardest-hit spots, quake epicentre Kahramanmaras, and acknowledged problems in the response.

"Of course, there are shortcomings. The conditions are clear to see. It's not possible to be ready for a disaster like this," he said.

Twitter was also not working on Turkish mobile networks, according to AFP journalists and NetBlocks web monitoring group.

Children saved

The window for rescuers to find survivors is narrowing as the effort nears the 72-hour mark that disaster experts consider the most likely period to save lives.

Yet on Wednesday, rescuers pulled children from under a collapsed building in the hard-hit Turkish province of Hatay, where whole stretches of towns have been levelled.

"All of a sudden we heard voices and thanks to the excavator... immediately we heard the voices of three people at the same time," said rescuer Alperen Cetinkaya.

"We are expecting more of them... the chances of getting people out of here alive are very high," he added.

Officials and medics said 12,391 people had died in Turkey and at least 2,992 in Syria from Monday's 7.8-magnitude tremor, bringing the total to 15,383 -- and experts fear the number will continue to rise sharply.

In Brussels, the EU is planning a donors conference in March to mobilise international aid for Syria and Turkey.

"We are now racing against the clock to save lives together," said EU chief Ursula von der Leyen on Twitter.

"No one should be left alone when a tragedy like this hits a people," von der Leyen said

'People dying every second'

Due to the scale of the damage and the lack of help coming to certain areas, survivors said they felt alone in responding to the disaster.

"Even the buildings that haven't collapsed were severely damaged. There are now more people under the rubble than those above it," a resident named Hassan, who did not provide his full name, said in the rebel-held Syrian town of Jindayris.

"There are around 400-500 people trapped under each collapsed building, with only 10 people trying to pull them out. And there is no machinery," he added.

The White Helmets, leading efforts to rescue people buried under rubble in rebel-held areas of Syria, have appealed for international help in their "race against time".

They have been toiling since the quake to pull survivors out from under the debris of dozens of flattened buildings in northwestern areas of war-torn Syria that remain outside the government's control.

A leading UN official called for the facilitation of aid access to rebel-held areas in the northwest, warning relief stocks will soon be depleted.

"Put politics aside and let us do our humanitarian work," the UN's resident Syria coordinator El-Mostafa Benlamlih told AFP in an interview.

Syria appeals for EU help

The issue of aid to Syria is a delicate one, and the sanctioned government in Damascus made an official plea to the EU for help, the bloc's commissioner for crisis management Janez Lenarcic said.

A decade of civil war and Syrian-Russian aerial bombardment had already destroyed hospitals, collapsed the economy and prompted electricity, fuel and water shortages.

The European Commission is "encouraging" EU member countries to respond to Syria's request for medical supplies and food, while monitoring to ensure that any aid "is not diverted" by President Bashar al-Assad's government, Lenarcic noted.

Dozens of nations, including the United States, China and the Gulf States have pledged to help, and search teams as well as relief supplies have already arrived.

The European Union was swift to dispatch rescue teams to Turkey after the massive earthquake struck the country on Monday close to the border with Syria.

But it initially offered only minimal assistance to Syria because of EU sanctions imposed since 2011 on Assad's government over its brutal crackdown on protesters that spiralled into a civil war.

The Turkey-Syria border is one of the world's most active earthquake zones.

Monday's quake was the largest Turkey has seen since 1939, when 33,000 people died in eastern Erzincan province.

In 1999, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake killed more than 17,000.

Viral Video: Joe Biden's Wife Kisses Kamala Harris's Husband In US House

US First lady Jill Biden kissed Vice President Kamala Harris' husband, Doug Emhoff on the lips ahead of the State of the Union Address on Capitol Hill on Tuesday.

On Tuesday night at the national Capitol, President Biden delivered his second State of the Union address, the first after he lost the majority in the US House of Representatives.

Soon after, the moment of the two sharing a kiss went viral on Twitter.

"Jill Biden just kissed Kamala Harris' husband on the lips. Didn't see that one coming," a person wrote on Twitter. "Did Jill Biden just kiss Kamala's husband on the LIPS?!," another said.

After the Republicans seized control of the House of Representatives, Biden is giving his first significant speech before a divided Congress.

He pushed Republicans "friends" to cooperate.

Joe Biden on Tuesday (local time) in his State of the Union address said that the American economy is better positioned to grow "than any country on Earth," despite disruptions from Covid-19 and Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

Biden began his remarks by greeting newly elected House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, showing early signs of bipartisanship.

The president also acknowledged Hakeem Jeffries, the first Black party leader in the House and the minority leader of the House.

Chinese Balloon In US Airspace: 4 Things To Know

The U.S. shooting down of what Washington says was a Chinese spy balloon and Beijing says was a civilian scientific vessel accidentally blown off course has fuelled widespread questions, including about the balloon itself.

More is likely to be learned about the balloon after the U.S. military recovers its remnants from the ocean off the coast of South Carolina.

Here's what we know, and don't know, about the balloon that has triggered a dramatic diplomatic dispute between the two powers:

How Big Is It?

The head of North American Aerospace Defence Command, General Glen VanHerck, described the balloon as being 200 feet (61 metres) high, with a surveillance payload the size of a regional passenger jet that likely weighed in excess of a couple thousand pounds.

Civilians viewing the balloon from the ground described it as a giant white orb as it floated about 60,000 feet (18,300 meters) above the central United States, an altitude roughly twice that of civilian air traffic.

U.S. officials said they had been tracking the high-altitude for some time and that it drifted over the United States for at least seven days.

What Has China Said?

China's foreign ministry said the balloon was mainly used for meteorological purposes and had limited self-steering ability. It said it was affected by the weather and unexpectedly drifted into U.S. airspace.

The ministry has also said it has no information to share about what company or entity owns the balloon.

Was It A Weather Balloon?

Kaymont, a U.S. firm that makes and distributes weather balloons globally, said the size, payload and flight time exceeded the capabilities of typical weather balloons that are made of latex.

"A typical weather forecasting balloon will have a lightweight radiosonde payload that is about 200 grams in weight. The balloon at release will be about 1.4 metres and will burst around 6 metres in diameter, and the flight time will be between 90-120 minutes," Jesse Geffen, a Kaymont account manager, told Reuters.

"Photographic payloads (high altitude photography and videography) may be carried by larger balloons, but wouldn't even be a third of the size of the balloon that flew over the country."

In China, the manufacture of weather balloons is dominated by a subsidiary of state chemical giant ChemChina, Zhuzhou R&D Institute for Rubber & Plastics (Zhuzhou Rubber), which makes 75% of high-altitude balloons used by the China Meteorological Administration, the country's regulator of state-owned firms said in a statement last year.

Smaller players include Guangzhou Double-One Weather Equipment Company, whose company's chairman Lin Xiuping told Reuters that her firm and Zhuzhou Rubber were capable of making balloons that could fly at the height the Chinese balloon was flying at over the United States.

She said, however, that Guangzhou Double-One was not the manufacturer of that balloon.

An employee that answered the phone at Zhuzhou Rubber's headquarters said the U.S. balloon had nothing to do with the company and declined to accept further questions.

So What Kind Of Balloon Was It?

Kaymont said the balloon was likely made of plastic film, not latex. Some descriptions thus far of the balloon debris being retrieved from the Atlantic Ocean say that there has been plastic.

By looks and by size, it resembles balloons made by U.S. firm Aerostar, whose own balloon was mistaken for the Chinese one while flying over Memphis.

Aerostar is an aerospace and defence contractor that supplies stratospheric balloons to the likes of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) made out of polyethylene film that can fly for over 200 days and carry hundreds of pounds.

It also previously had a deal with Google to use such balloons to provide internet to rural areas.

Other companies that develop stratospheric balloon systems include U.S. space tourism firm World View and French firm CNIM Air Space.

China does not appear to have a private company equivalent, but the official Chinese Academy of Sciences' Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR) and Institute of Optoelectronics have both conducted significant research on stratospheric balloons and published accounts of launches.

In 2017, for example, the Institute of Optoelectronics announced it had successfully flown a "super pressure" balloon it had developed in Inner Mongolia, describing it as having a volume of 7,000 cubic meters and able to carry 150 kilograms.

Last September, China's AIR announced the successful trial of a balloon that can reach heights of 30 km and carry up to 1.2 tonnes as part of a project for developing near-space technologies.

AIR is particularly keen on stratospheric balloon technology and has posted several articles on its WeChat account about Aerostar.

Reuters was not able to immediately establish what firms supply AIR or the Institute of Optoelectronics with their balloons.

Both institutes did not respond to requests for comment.

Chinese military researchers have recently argued in publicly-available papers that balloons and airships should be further developed and deployed across a range of missions, Reuters reported on Monday.

While analysts did not yet know the size of the Chinese balloon fleet, U.S. officials have spoken of dozens of missions since 2018 across five continents, with some targeting Japan, India, Vietnam, Taiwan and the Philippines.

Microsoft Says "New Day" For Search As AI-Powered Bing Challenges Google

Microsoft's long-struggling Bing search engine will integrate the powerful capabilities of language-based artificial intelligence, CEO Satya Nadella said on Tuesday, declaring what he called a new era for online search.

"It's a new day for search... The race starts today," Nadella said at a launch event, marking the start of what it hoped would be an unprecedented challenge to Google's two-decade dominance of the search engine market, using the technology created by the developers of AI bot ChatGPT.

ChatGPT has sparked a gold rush in artificial intelligence technology (AI) with more than 100 million users testing the bot's capabilities, receiving essays, speeches, or law exam results within seconds to the consternation of educators and school authorities worried about cheating.

Microsoft hopes that beefing up Bing with ChatGPT will radically update online search by providing ready-made answers using multiple sources instead of the familiar list of links to outside websites.

"We applied the AI model to our core search ranking engine, and we saw the largest jump in relevance in two decades," said Yusuf Mehdi, a Microsoft vice president.

OpenAI, a California-based startup founded in 2015, developed ChatGPT. Microsoft invested $1 billion in OpenAI in 2019 and just inked a new multi-billion deal with the firm, with funding from Elon Musk, among others.

Search is Google's golden cash cow and any serious challenge to its dominance seemed unthinkable until ChatGPT burst onto the scene two months ago.

Google's search engine holds 84 percent of the global market share, bringing in tens of billions of dollars in ad sales every quarter and making up more than two thirds of the tech giant's total revenue. Bing's market share stood at just nine percent last year.

- 'Shot across the bow' -

According to reports, Google declared ChatGPT's massive success a "code red" threat to the company with teams reassigned to brainstorm a swift answer and accelerate ongoing research on AI.

Spooked by the unexpected rivalry, Google on Monday preempted Microsoft's announcement and said that it was about to deliver its own version of ChatGPT, a bot named Bard that would also provide near immediate answers upon request.

Chinese search engine giant Baidu on Tuesday said it was preparing to put out an AI-powered chatbot, named "Ernie Bot," though the launch date was unknown.

"We view this as the first shot across the bow in this Big Tech AI battle that is set to hit its next gear of investments over the coming months with Microsoft now leading the race," said Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities.

Despite the new arms race in Big Tech, ChatGPT and similar bots continue to make mistakes and it remains unclear whether the technology, known as generative AI - will be able to completely supplant search as we currently know it.

Google has already integrated more conversational techniques into its search engine, including by providing easy-to-click answers to questions most often linked to a search request.

Before the release of ChatGPT, OpenAI had wowed tech geeks with Dall-E 2, a software that creates digital images with a simple instruction.

Over 7,800 Killed In Turkey, Syria Quake: "Children Freezing From Cold"

Rescuers in Turkey and Syria battled bitter cold Tuesday in a race against time to find survivors under buildings flattened by an earthquake that killed more than 7,800 people.

Tremors that inflicted more suffering on a border area, already plagued by conflict, left people on the streets burning debris to try to stay warm as international aid began to arrive.

But some extraordinary survival tales have emerged, including a newborn baby pulled alive from rubble in Syria, still tied by her umbilical cord to her mother who died in Monday's quake.

"We heard a voice while we were digging," Khalil al-Suwadi, a relative, told AFP. "We cleared the dust and found the baby with the umbilical cord (intact) so we cut it and my cousin took her to hospital."

The infant is the sole survivor of her immediate family, the rest of whom were killed in the rebel-held town of Jindayris.

The 7.8-magnitude quake struck Monday as people slept, flattening thousands of structures, trapping an unknown number of people and potentially impacting millions.

Whole rows of buildings collapsed, leaving some of the heaviest devastation near the quake's epicentre between the Turkish cities of Gaziantep and Kahramanmaras.

The destruction led to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declaring Tuesday a three-month state of emergency in 10 southeastern provinces.

- 'Children are freezing' -

Dozens of nations including the United States, China and the Gulf States have pledged to help, and search teams as well as relief supplies have begun to arrive by air.

Yet people in some of the hardest-hit areas said they felt they had been left to fend for themselves.

"I can't get my brother back from the ruins. I can't get my nephew back. Look around here. There is no state official here, for God's sake," said Ali Sagiroglu in the Turkish city of Kahramanmaras.

"For two days we haven't seen the state around here... Children are freezing from the cold," he added.

A winter storm has compounded the misery by rendering many roads -- some of them damaged by the quake -- almost impassable, resulting in traffic jams that stretch for kilometres in some regions.

The cold rain and snow are a risk both for people forced from their homes -- who took refuge in mosques, schools or even bus shelters -- and survivors buried under debris.

"It is now a race against time," said World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

"We have activated the WHO network of emergency medical teams to provide essential health care for the injured and most vulnerable," he added.

- 23 million could be affected -

The latest toll showed 5,434 people killed in Turkey and at least 1,872 in Syria, for a combined total of 7,306 fatalities.

There are fears that the toll will rise inexorably, with WHO officials estimating up to 20,000 may have died.

WHO warned that up to 23 million people could be affected by the massive earthquake and urged nations to rush help to the disaster zone.

The Syrian Red Crescent appealed to Western countries to lift sanctions and provide aid as President Bashar al-Assad's government remains a pariah in the West, complicating international relief efforts.

Washington and the European Commission said on Monday that humanitarian programmes supported by them were responding to the destruction in Syria.

The UN's cultural agency UNESCO also said it was ready to provide assistance after two sites listed on its World Heritage list in Syria and Turkey sustained damage.

In addition to the damage to Aleppo's old city and the fortress in the southeastern Turkish city of Diyarbakir, UNESCO said at least three other World Heritage sites could be affected.

Much of the quake-hit area of northern Syria has already been decimated by years of war and aerial bombardment by Syrian and Russian forces that destroyed homes, hospitals and clinics.

Residents in the quake-devastated town of Jandairis in northern Syria used their bare hands and pickaxes to search for survivors.

- 'Hear their voices' -

"My whole family is under there -- my sons, my daughter, my son-in-law... There's no one else to get them out," said Ali Battal, his face streaked with blood and head swathed in a wool shawl against the bitter cold.

"I hear their voices. I know they're alive but there's no one to rescue them," added the man in his 60s.

The Syrian health ministry reported damage across the provinces of Aleppo, Latakia, Hama and Tartus, where Russia is leasing a naval facility.

Even before the tragedy, buildings in Aleppo -- Syria's pre-war commercial hub -- often collapsed due to the dilapidated infrastructure.

Following the earthquake, prisoners mutinied at a jail holding mostly Islamic State group members in northwestern Syria, with at least 20 escaping, a source at the facility told AFP.

Turkey is in one of the world's most active earthquake zones.

The country's last 7.8-magnitude tremor was in 1939, when 33,000 died in the eastern Erzincan province.

The Turkish region of Duzce suffered a 7.4-magnitude earthquake in 1999, when more than 17,000 people died.

Experts have long warned a large quake could devastate Istanbul, a megalopolis of 16 million people filled with rickety homes.

Watch: Wild Chase Between A Crocodile And An Antelope Thrills The Internet

The 'survival of the fittest' can be seen and experienced the best way when we look at the animal kingdom. For animals, survival is an everyday issue, as they constantly need to be on alert mode else they can be killed by other and bigger predators. A perfect demonstration of the same can be seen in a video which is going viral on social media. The video shows an antelope swimming for its life as it is chased by a hungry crocodile.

The 50-second hair-raising clip was shared by filmmaker Vinod Kapri on Twitter. "A TOP class climax!," Mr Kapri captioned the video. The clip was originally shared on YouTube on the wildlife platform Latest Sightings.

Watch the video here:

The video opens to show an antelope swimming in a river. In just a few moments, it becomes clear that it is being pursued by a crocodile. The antelope leaps and swims at a swift pace to stay ahead of the crocodile which is desperate to hunt it down.

The thrilling chase between the two continues for a while, as both the animals, swim as fast as they can. However, after a few seconds, the crocodile manages to pounce on the antelope and drag it below water. Putting up a tough fight, the antelope kicks the crocodile, leaps out of the water and finally reaches the riverbank.

Meanwhile, the observers on a boat who were filming the video can be heard cheering for the antelope. The video has received more than 26,000 views, 1171 likes and several comments and reactions.

Internet users too were left fascinated to see the incredible life-and-death chase and many expressed relief on seeing the antelope escape the clutches of the crocodile. One user wrote, ''Yeah, Great escape.''

Another user wrote, "This buck is a real warrior, it's just spectacular how he swims and kicks the crocodile."  A third said, ''The croc's speed is shocking. Thank God for the antelope's instincts to jump at the end to free himself from the water. That was one determined croc. Unbelievable.''
