US Shuts Airspace Over Lake Michigan, Cites "National Defense"

The airspace over Lake Michigan has been temporarily restricted due to national defence reasons, according to a U.S. Federal Aviation Administration notice on Sunday.

The notice said the airspace was being restricted for "national defense" reasons. There was no immediate comment from the Pentagon or the FAA.

The closure of the airspace follows the shoot-down by U.S. aircraft of a Chinese spy balloon and two unidentified flying objects.

Canadian investigators are hunting for the wreckage of the mysterious flying object shot down by a U.S. fighter jet over Yukon territory, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Sunday, as the U.S. Senate's top lawmaker said that it - and another flying object shot down off the coast of Alaska - both appeared to be balloons.

"Recovery teams are on the ground, looking to find and analyze the object," Trudeau told reporters. He gave no hint as to what it was but said it "represented a reasonable threat to the security of civilian flight."

"The security of citizens is our top priority and that's why I made the decision to have that unidentified object shot down," he said.

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer provided a bit more detail to U.S. broadcaster ABC, saying that American national security officials believe the object destroyed over Canada - as well as another flying object shot over the sea ice near Deadhorse, Alaska on Friday - were both balloons.

"They believe they were (balloons), yes, but much smaller than the first one," Schumer said, referring to the balloon that was shot down off the coast of South Carolina last Saturday - a big, white, eye-catching inflatable whose trip across the U.S. airspace at the beginning of the month sparked an international incident.

The White House said only that the recently downed objects "did not closely resemble" the Chinese balloon, echoing Schumer's description of them as "much smaller."

American officials have accused the Chinese of using the 200-foot-tall (60-meter-high) balloon for surveillance. China's government has said it was a civilian research vessel that went off course and has condemned its destruction.

U.S. officials have been scouring the ocean to recover debris and electronic gadgetry since the original balloon's destruction. Schumer said he was confident U.S. investigators would get to the bottom of what it was being used for.

"We're going to probably be able to piece together this whole, whole surveillance balloon and know exactly what's going on," he said.

Meanwhile North America is on high alert for aerial intruders.

On Saturday, the U.S. military also scrambled fighter jets in Montana to investigate a radar anomaly that triggered a brief federal closure of airspace. North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) later said the pilots didn't identify anything corresponding to the radar hits.

Republican lawmaker Mike Turner, who serves on the U.S. House Armed Services Committee, suggested that President Joe Biden's administration might be overcompensating for what he described as its previously lax monitoring of American airspace.

"They do appear somewhat trigger-happy," Turner told CNN on Sunday.

"I would prefer them to be trigger happy than to be permissive."

"Roads So Bad That...": Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's Letter To Nitin Gadkari

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Saturday wrote to Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari over the poor condition of the road connection between Chennai to Ranipet National Highway.

The Chief Minister claimed that the condition of the road is so bad that he had to plan his recent visits to a few districts by train.

Highlighting that the road segment provides "vital connectivity" from Chennai and its ports to the industrial clusters in Kanchipuram, Vellore, Ranipet, Hosur and Krishnagiri, Stain said that the reply given by the Union Minister in the Parliament to a specific request made by DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran in this regard was "very general" and "non-committal".

"I wish to bring to your kind notice the request made by Thiru. Dayanidhi Maran, MP, to yourself on the floor of the Parliament to improve the condition of the existing road stretch from Chennai to Ranipet (NH-4). This segment provides the vital connectivity from Chennai city and its ports to the industrial clusters in Kanchipuram, Vellore, Ranipet, Hosur and Krishnagiri. The condition of the road is so bad that I had to plan my recent visits to a few districts by train. While the request from our MP was very specific on this important road, we were disappointed with your reply which was very general and non-committal."

He further pointed, "I also wish to bring to your notice the efforts taken by our Government to support NHAI projects in the State. The Chennai Port to Madurvoyal Elevated Expressway Project has been revived by extending every possible help, including granting exemption from royalty on aggregates."

"Similar concessions, which were never given in the past, have been extended to other major NHAI projects. Based on the requests from your side, the validity of soil/gravel permits has been extended from 3 months to 1 year on 9-5-2022. A Special Cell has been constituted in the State Headquarters to monitor land acquisition for highway projects. Permissions from Forest Department are also being reviewed and to the best of my knowledge, no major NHAI project is held up for want of such permissions," he added.

In addition, the progress in land acquisition and borrow earth permissions by the District Collectors is being regularly monitored at the level of the chief secretary. The other requests for providing borrow earth free of cost by waiving the material cost, royalty and seigniorage charges are also under consideration."

Stalin further said that it was unfortunate that an impression was created that the state government was not cooperating with NHAI has been underlined in Nitin Gadkari's reply in Parliament.

"With all such sincere efforts by the Government, it was unfortunate that an impression that the State Government was not cooperating with NHAI has been underlined in your reply in the Parliament. I assure you that it is not true and we have been trying our best to expedite all major infrastructure projects without discriminating between the projects undertaken by the State and Union Governments."

The Chief Minister also noted that six-laning work was in progress in the Sriperumbudur to Walajapet section of NH-4, but the work has been held up due to contractual issues between the contractors and NHAI and hence the condition of the existing road is very bad.

"I would be extremely grateful to you if you could instruct your officials to look into the very specific request raised by our MP. The road stretch pointed out is the Sriperumbudur to Walajapet section of NH-4 where the six-laning work is in progress. The works have been held up due to contractual issues between the contractors and NHAI and hence the condition of the existing road is very bad. It is not out of place to mention that the Hon'ble High Court of Madras in December 2020 reduced the toll fee at Sriperumbudur and Chennasamudram Toll plaza to 50 per cent due to such poor maintenance. The poor road conditions and the difficulties faced by road users have caused a major dent in the reputation of NHAI, which otherwise has been doing an excellent job in our State," he said.

Assuring of all necessary cooperation for NHAI projects Stalin the Union Minister requested that suitable instructions need to be issued to the NHAI officials to expedite the six-laning works and maintain the road stretch in good condition.

"In view of the above, I request that suitable Instructions may kindly be Issued to the NHAI officials to expedite the six-laning works and maintain the road stretch in good condition. I once again assure you that we will continue to extend all necessary cooperation for your projects," he added.

US Blacklists 6 Companies For Supporting China's Balloon Programme

The US Commerce Department said Friday it has blacklisted six Chinese entities for supporting Beijing's military modernization efforts, particularly relating to aerospace programs including airships and balloons.

The move came a day after US lawmakers unanimously denounced China's use of a suspected spy balloon that flew over North America last week.

The balloon's days-long flyover from Alaska to South Carolina captured the attention of regular Americans and officials, before the US military shot it down off the country's east coast Saturday.

Companies added to the so-called Entity List are restricted from obtaining US items and technologies without government authorization.

"The (People's Republic of China's) use of high-altitude balloons violates our sovereignty and threatens US national security," said Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security Alan Estevez in a statement on Friday.

"Today's action makes clear that entities that seek to harm US national security and sovereignty will be cut off from accessing US technologies," he added.

The six companies include Beijing Nanjiang Aerospace Technology Co; China Electronics Technology Group Corporation 48th Research Institute; and Dongguan Lingkong Remote Sensing Technology Co.

The other three are Eagles Men Aviation Science and Technology Group Co.; Guangzhou Tian-Hai-Xiang Aviation Technology Co.; along with Shanxi Eagles Men Aviation Science and Technology Group Co.

In a document, the Commerce Department said China's military is utilizing high-altitude balloons "for intelligence and reconnaissance activities," adding that this was contrary to US national security and foreign policy interests.

China insists the balloon was a "civilian airship used for research, mainly meteorological purposes."

But a State Department official has indicated the US believes the balloon to be under the control of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, and is part of a fleet that China has sent over more than 40 countries on five continents to collect intelligence information.

Friday's action indicates concerted efforts to identify and disrupt China's use of surveillance balloons, "which have violated the airspace of the United States and more than forty countries," said Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Export Enforcement Matthew Axelrod.

"Export Enforcement will vigilantly monitor and prevent shipments to the listed parties and investigate any efforts to circumvent these restrictions," he said.

"What A Nightmare...": Australia Great Comes Down Hard On Steve Smith

Former Australia opener Matthew Hayden was critical of Steve Smith's slip fielding after he dropped catches from Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja on Day 2 of the first Test match between India and Australia in Nagpur. While the chance from Rohit was quite difficult, Jadeja's edge on the second last delivery of the day was more or less a comfortable opportunity. The call came at a good height for Smith as first slip but he was late to react to it and it ended up hitting his arm and falling to the ground.

“What a nightmare this is for a slips fieldsman,” former Australian batter Matthew Hayden said on-air. “Sort of remained unsighted there. Should have made a better effort than that. Concentration factor – second last ball of the day. Bang. Gotta be on!” Hayden said at the end of day's play.

A similar sentiment was echoed by compatriot Mark Waugh who explained the situation. “It's like he doesn't think the ball will come to him, looks away from the game. You have got to read the play. You have got to pretend you are actually batting when you are fielding at first slip to the spinners.”

Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar also had his say on the topic.

“Absolutely, he wasn't bending low. I don't think he was expecting the catch to come there.”He further added, “The back isn't bent and the catch came towards the knee. So that can make the difference. Yes, it's been a long day. It's been a tiring day, but the last couple of deliveries is where your concentration is most tested. Tough day for Steve Smith, he'll feel it. he's a good catcher.”

Air India Seals "Historic" Deal To Buy 500 New Planes: Report

Air India has sealed a jumbo deal for about 500 new planes worth more than $100 billion at list prices, in what could become the single largest order by any airline as it seeks to reinvent itself under its new owners, industry sources told Reuters.

The deal, split equally between France's Airbus and rival planemaker Boeing, was first reported by Reuters in December and could finally be announced as early as next week, the sources said.

Air India has agreed to purchase 250 Airbus planes, split between 210 single-aisle A320neos and 40 widebody A350s, and 220 Boeing aircraft including 190 of its 737 MAX narrowbody jets, 20 787 widebodies and 10 777Xs.

While Airbus and Air India signed the agreement on Friday, Boeing agreed its deal with the airline on Jan. 27, a date that marks a year since Tata regained ownership of the former state-run carrier, sources told Reuters.

Airbus declined to comment. Air India did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment outside of regular business hours.

In a note to employees on Jan. 27, the airline said it was "finalising a historic order for new aircraft".

The order reflects Air India's strategy to modernise its ageing fleet and re-capture a solid share of trips between India's large overseas diaspora and cities such as Delhi and Mumbai, dominated mainly by Gulf rivals such as Emirates with its young planes.

The deal for 400 narrowbodies will also allow Air India to win a bigger share of regional international traffic and the domestic market, setting up a battle on both fronts with IndiGo.

While the Airbus figure is slightly lower than the 275 originally envisaged, the sources did not rule out a provision by Air India for top-up acquisitions or leases at a later point.

It was not immediately clear to what extent the numbers in the agreement included options that could change the total tally when the final orders are in.

The record order aims to put Air India in the league of large global airlines and make it an influential customer for planemakers and suppliers at a time when its home market is seeing a strong post-COVID-19 travel surge.

Air India, with its maharajah mascot, was once known for its lavishly decorated planes and stellar service but its reputation declined in the mid-2000s as financial troubles mounted.

Under its new owners, the airline is looking to restore its reputation at home and abroad as a storied carrier with impeccable service and world-class planes.

Air India Finalises Deal To Buy 250 Planes In Jumbo Order: Report

Air India has finalised an order for around 250 aircraft with Airbus and the deal is expected to be announced next week, a source said on Thursday.

The source in the know also said the airline has signed a deal with Boeing for about 200 planes.

Specific details could not be immediately ascertained and there was no immediate comments from Air India about the deals.

The Tata group-owned Air India is expanding its operations as well as fleet.

On January 27, Air India chief Campbell Wilson said the airline is finalising a historic order of new aircraft.

Air India, earlier under the ownership of the government, had acquired new aircraft more than 16 years ago.

It has not purchased a single aircraft since 2005 and the last order was for 111 aircraft -- 68 with Boeing Co and remaining 43 with Airbus -- and that deal was worth USD 10.8 billion.

The source told PTI that the deal with Airbus for around 250 planes has been finalised and the announcement is likely next week.

The deal is likely to include 40 wide-body Airbus A350s and Air India will be the first Indian carrier to operate the aircraft.

In the past, Air India had operated wide-body A330s.

On Wednesday, aviation consultancy CAPA said Indian carriers are likely to place orders for up to 1,700 planes by 2024 and Air India may make the first move with some 500 planes order.

Currently, Indian carriers operate less than 50 wide-body aircraft, an insignificant number for such a significant market. In contrast, Emirates alone has a fleet of over 260 wide-bodies, CAPA had said.

Recently, IndiGo started wide-body operations on India-Turkey route with a wet-leased B777 and plans to induct two more such planes.

"Opportunity For India To Set Global Narrative": G20 Top Official To NDTV

India's G20 presidency comes at a challenging time amid the war in Ukraine and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the country can surely work hard to transform those challenges into opportunities, India's G20 presidency Chief Coordinator Harsh Vardhan Shringla told NDTV in an interview.

"Developing countries are facing the brunt of a difficult global situation. So yes, there are challenges and there are opportunities. The Prime Minister has correctly pointed out that every challenge can be transformed into an opportunity. That's how we see our (G20) presidency," Mr Shringla said.

"We see our presidency as very critical, coming at a critical stage. There is an expectation among the global community that India has made its mark in many ways on the global scenario. We will be able to provide elements of what could be solutions to global challenges of the day," Mr Shringla told NDTV.

India took over the G20 presidency in December last year. It will hold the title till November 30. The G20 consists of two parallel tracks - the finance track and the sherpa track. These working groups meet regularly throughout the term of each presidency. In addition, there are engagement groups that bring together civil societies, parliamentarians, think tanks, etc.

"Our priorities in the G20 will largely be determined by what the international community is looking for," he added.

India's G20 presidency enables it to propose and set the agenda for the year. The G20 members can then add their inputs to the agenda that India has set, Mr Shringla said.

"In other words, India today has the opportunity to set its agenda, its narrative on the global agenda. And that is important for us," he said.

The G20 represent 85 per cent of the global gross domestic product, 75 per cent of international trade and two-thirds of the world's population.

Foreign Minister S Jaishankar at the 'G20 University Connect Event' in December said India's G20 presidency is taking place at a very critical moment in international affairs. Over the last three years, the world has seen the economic and social devastation caused by the Covid pandemic, quite apart from its human toll.

"It has aggravated the financial situation of developing countries, undermined the pursuit of sustainable development goals, and created a health divide between the developed and the developing. To this was added the knock-on effects of the Ukraine conflict, especially the difficulties in the availability and affordability of fuel, of food, of fertilizers," Mr Jaishankar had said.

India, however, will work to provide a stronger voice to the issues of interest of the Global South. "This is very much a part of our DNA," the Foreign Minister later told the Rajya Sabha in the winter session.

5 Foods To Avoid Eating Before You Board A Flight

Ever felt nauseous after your flight takes off? Does your stomach start aching once you're in the air? In-flight food options are often limited, which makes matters even worse. When you cross beyond a certain altitude, air pressure changes, which immediately affects your body. The motion and constrained space of the flight cause further discomfort. The best way to avoid these problems is to make better food choices before you board the plane. We spoke to our consultant nutritionist Rupali Datta for tips to improve one's air travel experience.

Here are the top 5 food and drinks you must avoid before your flight:

1. Apples

You may be surprised to find apples on this list - after all, they are often considered one of the healthiest fruits. The truth is, apples are hard to digest. Its high fibre content can lead to bloating and constipation. Hence, it is better to consume fruits that are lighter on the stomach, such as bananas, papayas, or oranges. Does this mean fruit juices are a good idea? You may sip them in small quantities before your flight, but pay attention to their sugar content. Many fruit juices have too much sugar and this can lead to gut discomfort once you're in the air.

2. Broccoli

Broccoli is the apple of vegetables in the sense that you constantly hear that they are good for health. But steer clear of this vegetable before your flight. Just like apples, broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower may cause gas and bloating. Another common mistake people make is eating a raw salad before flying. Raw veggies can cause indigestion and stomach ache. Pick a simple fruit salad instead.

3. Fast food

More often than not, we are forced to eat fast food at airports as healthier options are not easily available (or affordable). Alternately, we crave junk food since we could be going on a vacation. However, remember that fast food is often high in salt, sugar and preservatives. These elements, which are anyway harmful to you, are even more problematic while flying. They cause bloating, dehydration and acidity. So swap that burger for idli instead. It is best to carry some healthy food with you from home, so you are not dependent on airport outlets.

4. Coffee and aerated beverages

It is very tempting to drink coffee to stay awake, especially before early morning or late-night flights. But keep in mind that caffeine is likely to cause dehydration, which can leave you feeling worse later. Other drinks with a similar effect on your system are aerated beverages and alcohol. To keep yourself hydrated, Rupali recommends nimbu paani (with less or no sugar) and coconut juice.

5. Beans

Beans and legumes contain specific fibres that some people find hard to digest. Although they are rich in protein and minerals, they can cause gas and acidity issues, especially when flying. Hence, it is best to opt for lighter meals.

Each person's immune system reacts differently when flying. If you're someone who is prone to violent air sickness, Rupali Datta suggests not eating anything three hours before boarding the plane. But remember to stay hydrated and avoid the temptation of processed snacks.
