Amit Shah Lands In Manipur, Begins Series Of Meetings: 10 Points

  1. Amit Shah has met Chief Minister N Biren Singh's council of ministers and Governor Anusuiya Uikey. He is also likely to be briefed by the state's top security officials. His meetings are likely to continue till late, sources said.
  2. Mr Shah is likely to stay in the violence-hit state for the next few days and meet all the stakeholders -- top army officials, civil society organisations and influential community leaders -- to finalise a strategy to curb the ethnic violence.
  3. Top officials said Mr Shah may visit some of the districts populated by both Meities and Kuki tribals, who have been in conflict since May 3. Some of these districts are located on the Myanmar borders.
  4. Except for some minor incidents, there was no major incident of violence reported in the 11 hill districts on Monday. On Sunday, at least five people, including a policeman, were killed and 12 others injured after fresh violence.
  5. Alleged terrorists, carrying sophisticated weapons, had set fire to many houses in Serou and Sugunu area. The Army, Central Para-Military, Manipur Police commando, Rapid Action Force of Manipur police personnel are still conducting combing operations in the Imphal valley and surrounding districts.
  6. Civilians living in the outskirts of Imphal Valley are being evacuated by the security personnel. Around 140 columns of the Indian Army and Assam Rifles, comprising around 10,000 personnel, had to be deployed to curb the violence and bring normalcy in the northeastern state.
  7. Earlier on Monday, Chief Minister N Biren Singh and Mr Shah's deputy Nityanand Rai reviewed the security situation along with top officials. The Chief Minister has said that over the last couple of days, "40 terrorists" have been shot dead.
  8. Manipur has been witnessing ethnic clashes connected to multiple issues for more than a month. It started with tension over the eviction of Kuki villagers from reserve forest land, which led to a series of smaller agitations.
  9. On May 3, clashes had broken out in the hill state after tribals organised a solidarity march on to protest against the Meiteis' demand for Scheduled Tribe status.  More than 80 people died in the violence that had simmered for over a week. Property worth crores was torched and thousands were forced to leave their homes.
  10. Though Meities comprise 64 per cent of the state's population, they occupy 10 per cent of the state's territory as non-tribals are not allowed to buy land in notified hill areas. Their inclusion in the ST category will enable them to purchase land and the possibility has upset the tribals.

Gujarat Titans' 21-year-old Sai Sudharsan played the scintillating innings to notch up the highest score by an uncapped player in the history of the Indian Premier League final. Sudharsan achieved this feat during the IPL 2023 final match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Monday where he played a sensational innings of 96 off just 47 balls. Sudharsan also became the second-youngest batter to score a half-century in the IPL final. At the age of 21 years and 226 days, He broke the record of Manan Vohra, who scored a fifty in the IPL 2014 final, at the age of 20 years and 318 days. GT acquired Sudharsan for Rs. 20 lakh in the IPL 2022 auction.

Coming to the match, Sai Sudharsan's sensational knock of 96 and Wriddhiman Saha's fine fifty propelled Gujarat Titans (GT) to 214/4 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the final of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 here at Narendra Modi Stadium on Monday.

Sudharsan scored the highest for Gujarat with a sensational 96 off 47 deliveries while Saha played a fine knock of 54 off 39 balls. For CSK, Matheesha Pathirana bagged two while Deepak Chahar and Ravindra Jadeja scalped one wicket each.

After being put to bat first, Gujarat Titans got off to the finest start with their openers Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha slamming CSK bowlers all around the ground.

The Gujarat openers rotated the strike brilliantly, not allowing the CSK bowlers to settle down while whacking the loose balls on offer.

CSK's experienced all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja provided his team with a big breakthrough as he dismissed star batter Gill for 39 off 20 balls in the seventh over of the game. However, Saha displayed great resilience and determination as he slammed CSK bowlers at regular intervals.

The left-handed batter Sai Sudharsan then came out to bat. The pair of Saha and Sudharsan took their team's target beyond the 100-run mark, stitching up a fine partnership.

Saha continued his blistering form as he brought up his half-century in 36 balls. Saha's innings at the crease was cut short as he was sent packing by Deepak Chahar after scoring 54 runs. GT captain and right-handed batter Hardik Pandya came out to bat.

Sudharsan kept the momentum going for Gujarat Titans as he slammed boundaries at regular intervals. Sudharsan single-handedly hammered Tushar Deshpande for 20 runs with the help of three boundaries and one maximum in the 17th over.

Pandya and Sudharsan stitched up fifty run partnership stand in just 23 balls. Pandya and Sudharsan hammered Deshpande for 18 runs and guided their team beyond the 200-run mark.

CSK bowlers did not had any answer to Sudharsan's on slaughter as the batter kept hammering every bower all around the ground.

In the last over, Sudharsan slammed two back-to-back sixes, however, he lost his wicket to Matheesha Pathirana. Sudharsan fell short of 4 runs off making his maiden IPL century. Rashid Khan then came out to bat.

Pathirana then delivered superb balls and took the wicket of Rashid Khan on the last ball of the final over to restrict GT to 214/4 in 20 overs.

Alleged Sexual Harassment At Delhi's UP Bhavan, Officials Suspended

A woman has alleged that she has been sexually assaulted at the Uttar Pradesh Bhavan, the state guest house in the heart of Delhi. After a case was filed by the Delhi Police, several officials have been suspended and a room where the incident allegedly took place, has been sealed, sources said.

The accused, Rajyavardhan Singh Parmar, is the national president of an organisation called Maharana Pratap Sena, sources said.

Sources said the man came to UP Bhavan with the woman on May 26 around 12.15 pm. He was allotted a room and left the place at 1.50.

The woman later lodged a complaint at the Chanakyapuri police station, alleging that she was sexually exploited by Rajyavardhan Singh Parmar.

Security cameras from the building showed the man and woman inside the building. The room where they stayed at the UP Bhavan, room number 122, has been sealed ahead of forensic tests.

The Uttar Pradesh government has ordered a departmental inquiry.

Three officials posted at the UP Bhavan have been suspended.

Sources said they had allotted a room to the accused even though he is not eligible to book a room. Government guest houses in the national capital usually host government employees.

Rajyavardhan Singh Parmar had claimed that he was booking the room for a government officer and wanted to see it before taking a call, sources said.

The Delhi Police said the allegations are being investigated.

Thousands Evacuated From Canadian City Amid "Incredibly Serious" Wildfire

A wildfire in the eastern Canadian city of Halifax led to mandatory evacuation orders for thousands of homes, with officials saying residents are not allowed to return until advised by municipal authorities.

Halifax Mayor Mike Savage said about 18,000 people were impacted by evacuations.

The evacuation orders issued Sunday cover areas of Hammonds Plains, Upper Tantallon and Pockwock. These suburban communities are home to many of the city's workers and are situated about 15 miles from Halifax. Residents in nearby neighbourhoods, which are surrounded by forest, were left uneasy throughout the night.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted on Monday that the wildfire situation in the province of Nova Scotia, where Halifax is located, is "incredibly serious", and that his government was ready to provide any assistance if needed.

Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Deputy Chief Dave Meldrum told reporters on Monday morning the fire burning in the Tantallon and Hammonds Plains area was "ongoing and still not under control." The cause of the fire was still being probed and there were no reports yet of deaths and injuries.

Mr Meldrum added about 100 firefighters were battling the fires overnight. He also said emergency crews had a lot of work to do for "many days" ahead.

The city declared a state of local emergency late on Sunday after the wildfire caused evacuations and power outages, with authorities also shutting several schools in the affected areas.

The wildfire, aided by strong winds and tinder-dry woods, damaged dozens of homes and also hampered rescue services. The state of emergency would be in effect for seven days, unless lifted or extended, the municipality said.

Western Canadian provinces of Alberta, which goes to the polls on Monday, and British Columbia have also been dealing with an unusually warm spring this year that has sparked several out-of-control wildfires, cutting oil and gas production. But most of those fires have since been brought under control, helping oil and gas production to resume.

In the main oil-producing province of Alberta, the intensity of one of the most challenging wildfire seasons in years continued to ease, allowing oil and gas producers to restart production that they had temporarily shut in out of caution.

Crescent Point Energy said it restored the 45,000 barrels of oil equivalent of output it had previously paused, while Paramount Resources said it restored most of the production it had curtailed due to the fires.

What Government Said About 6 Cheetah Deaths In 2 Months

The central government has denied any lapses behind the deaths of six cheetahs - including three cubs - within two months at the Kuno National Park (KNP) in Madhya Pradesh. "There is no lapse behind any of the cheetah deaths. Even in the case of the deaths of the three cheetah cubs, global wildlife literature clearly mentions 90% per cent infant mortality among cheetahs," said an official.

"We haven't done any trials with any of the cheetahs trans-located to KNP from the two African nations. Cheetahs live in a coalition, so even the mating of a female cheetah with a male coalition wasn't done as any trial. It was done based on documented evidence and following clearance from African experts," said CP Goyal, director general of forests.

A female cheetah had died during an aggressive interaction with two male cheetahs.

Union Forest, Environment, and Climate Change Minister Bhupendra Yadav has said that officers and employees involved in cheetah conservation and management will be selected and sent for the study tour to Namibia in South Africa under the Cheetah Project. All possible cooperation including financial resources will be provided by the Central Government for the protection, conservation, promotion, and proposed Cheetah Protection Force.

Mr Yadav had a discussion regarding the Cheetah Project with Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, state Forest Minister Dr Vijay Shah, and senior officials of the state government in a high-level meeting in Bhopal. He also chaired the 23rd meeting of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) at the Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM) in Bhopal.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that Madhya Pradesh is a tiger state and it is a matter of prestige. The state government is committed to the success of Project Cheetah, he added.

"Information about the survival rate of birth of cheetah cubs was given at the beginning itself. The entire staff associated with the Cheetah project is working dedicatedly. The progress of the project is satisfactory," Mr Chouhan said.

The Chief Minister also instructed the state forest department that necessary arrangements should be completed on a war footing in the Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary for alternative habitats for cheetahs.

Since March 27, three adult cheetahs and three cubs (out of the four cubs born in March) have died at the KNP, causing concern about the success of the ambitious project.

US Debt Ceiling Deal: Key Takeaways

President Joe Biden and House Republicans have reached a deal to raise the government's debt ceiling and avert a devastating default.

Here, AFP details the key takeaways from the agreement, which still needs to be approved by a divided Congress in a vote on Wednesday.

Did either side win?

After days of long, difficult talks, the deal allows both sides to claim a victory of sorts. Biden called it a "compromise" while Republican House speaker Kevin McCarthy described it as "worthy of the American people."

The 99-page text was released Sunday night and the agreement will be subject to scrutiny and debate in the coming days.

Some demands from both camps were not accepted, such as the elimination of certain tax loopholes requested by Democrats, and the repeal of clean energy tax credits sought by Republicans.

The crux of it

Formally known as the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023, the Bill provides for an increase to the debt ceiling of $31.4 trillion for two years, meaning Biden will crucially not need to negotiate it again before the November 2024 presidential election.

The deal also places limited curbs on federal spending that will please some Republicans, but it does not deliver the big cuts that right-wingers wanted and which progressive Democrats would have balked at.

Spending

The deal holds non-military spending roughly flat for the 2024 fiscal year from this year. It also limits the increase by one percent for 2025, according to the proposed Bill.

The agreement preserves plans by the Biden administration to increase spending for the military and veterans in line with inflation as well.

IRS clawback

The deal also pares back funds allocated for the expansion of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Last year, Congress approved $80 billion for the IRS to boost tax enforcement. The debt ceiling agreement pulls back $10 billion to spend in other areas.

Unspent Covid money

The deal would also take back some funding that Congress allocated for the coronavirus pandemic but did not spend. A statement from McCarthy's office said the deal would rescind "billions in unspent Covid funds" but offered no further specificity.

No changes will be made to Medicaid, the government's health insurance program for the most disadvantaged Americans.

Work requirements

The deal establishes work requirements for people who are receiving federal food assistance or on family welfare, in a victory for the Republican side.

It is set to raise the age at which childless adults will be required to work to receive food stamps from 49 to 54. As a concession to Democrats, the deal relaxes the requirements for veterans and the homeless.

NASA Shares Stunning Image Of ''Heart-Shaped'' Glacier On Pluto's Surface

Space agency NASA routinely captures stunning images of our universe, leaving space lovers mesmerized. On Sunday, NASA shared a stunning image on Instagram taken by its New Horizons spacecraft showing a heart-shaped glacier on Pluto's surface. The heart-shaped region is known unofficially as Tombaugh Regio and is made of nitrogen and methane.

The image was captioned as ''Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Our New Horizons spacecraft captured this heart-shaped glacier. It lies on Pluto's surface, which also features mountains, cliffs, valleys, craters, and plains, thought to be made of methane and nitrogen ice ''

See the image here:

It described the image as ''Pluto's surface is marked with cracks and craters in shades of brown. The partially visible heart appears in the lower right of the small world, which is surrounded by black space.⁣''

New Horizons launched in January 2006 and reached Pluto in July 2015, flying within 7,800 miles of its surface, and becoming the first probe to fly by Pluto and its moons. The far-traveling spacecraft also visited a distant Kuiper Belt object Ultima Thule (2014 MU69) in January 2019.

Instagram users loved the picture and shared a variety of comments.  One user wrote, ''Wouahh what a great capture, thanks to New Horizon spacecraft.'' Another commented, ''For me, Pluto will always be a planet.''

A third said, ''Why is Pluto, not a plane? it literally has a heart!'' A fourth added, ''Being afar doesn't mean you aren't part of the family.''

Pluto was once considered the ninth planet in the solar system, however, it was demoted in 2006 and reclassified as a dwarf planet. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) downgraded the status of Pluto to that of a dwarf planet because it did not meet the three criteria the IAU uses to define a full-sized planet.

Pluto is slightly over 1,400 miles (2250 km) wide or about half the breadth of the United States or two-thirds the width of the Moon. With its average temperature of -387F (-232C) - Pluto's surface is coated in ice made of water, methane, and nitrogen and is believed to have a rocky core and possibly a deep ocean.

Ashok Gehlot, His Party Rival Sachin Pilot To Meet Congress Chief Today

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge will hold separate meetings with Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and his bete noire Sachin Pilot on Monday in Delhi, a senior party leader familiar with the development said.

The chief minister's office has also released Mr Gehlot's programme confirming his visit to Delhi, where he will also lay the foundation stone of the Rajasthan House.

The proposed meeting comes close on the heels of Pilot's "ultimatum" that if three demands he made from the state government were not met by the end of this month, he would launch a state-wide agitation.

Mr Pilot has asked for a high-level inquiry into the alleged scams that took place during the tenure of the former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje government, as one of his demands.

According to the senior leader, a meeting of the Congress top brass with all the state leaders was scheduled on May 26 but was later postponed.

He said that now the high command will meet Mr Gehlot and Mr Pilot separately to bring them on one platform ahead of the assembly elections, which are due later this year.

Mr Kharge was successful in bringing Siddaramaiah and D K Shivakumar together in Karnataka and the party now wants to try the same formula in Rajasthan, the senior leader said.

He also said that a few days ago a meeting of the Congress high command with the leaders of all poll-bound states, including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Telangana, was planned, which was postponed.
